Talking About The Weather Again

Yes, more weather talk.  This past Tuesday in the Twin Cities we went from having the heat on in the morning to needing the air conditioning on in the evening.  That's right.  We went from temperatures in the 50s to a high of 98 degrees.  Ick.

Whoops!   Spoiler Alert

I didn't mean to spoil the Kevin Spacey connection to the film Se7en, but I did.  In order to not dig a deeper hole, I went into the spoiler after the show "ended" so that listeners could turn off the show if they wanted to avoid the spoilage.

SPOILER ALERT!  The thing I talked about was that I swear Spacey works in a little Henry Fonda in the delivery of one line.  I'd love to ask Spacey if it was intentional.

Here's the scene from Se7en the line comes at the 1:20 mark.  Compare it to this scene from the Henry Fonda film 12 Angry Men.  Pay close attention to the 1:49 mark.  Am I right or am I right?

ABBA's Super Trouper

It's a really enjoyable song about how sick and tired the singer is of touring and performing in concert.  But, at the up-coming show the love of her life will be in the crowd, so that show will be fine.  The fans should be insulted.  "What are we?  Chopped liver?"

Never Found In The 80s: Cocteau Twins

This band certainly requires a lyrics sheet if you want to know what is being sung.  With this Scottish band it was more about the feeling than the words.  You can see my piece on this never found band at the Stuck in the 80s blog.

Gas Pump Couple A Put On?

It was a feel good moment.  It really was, but the skeptic in me wondered if it was too good to be true.  Well, it just might have been.  The singing and dancing couple "discovered" at a gas pump during a regular gag bit on the Tonight Show became an internet sensation.

The original clip was very inspiring, but subsequent information has cast doubts on just how spontaneous the whole thing was.  Read all about it here.

The Skeptic's Bias

Last week I talked about Ben Radford's admonishment of "psychics" failing to warn of impending tragedies.  Well, I talked about it some more.  I acknowledged that we skeptics probably do have a bias against folks claiming to have psychic ability.  That bias is come by honestly, because thus far no one has ever proved they have any abilities that a competent magician doesn't also possess.

I also touched on open-mindedness.  Skeptics (big "S" or small) are the ones with the open minds.  Show us the evidence to back up your extraordinary claim and, if it stands up to scrutiny, we will change our minds.  That's being open-minded.

Movie Recommendation: Unforgiven (1992)

Warner Brothers

This is a terrific Western!  Clint Eastwood stars in and directed this nuanced take on one of my favorite film genres.  This film blurs the lines between the good guys and bad guys.  And with a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and Richard Harris it is hard to go wrong.

Music heard on the show (These songs are linked above)...

Dimland Radio opening theme song: 'Ram' by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: 'Cotton Alley' by 10,000 Maniacs & 'Ivo' by Cocteau Twins
Second ad break bumpers: 'Jesus Chrysler Drives A Dodge' by The Screaming Blue Messiahs & 'Baby Have Some Faith' by 54-40

Brush With The Service Industry

We (my family, my wife and I) are getting a new bed for my son, Hayden.  The bed he's had isn't the best.  It's old and hard and cold and he doesn't like it.  So, a new bed is on it's way.

Earlier in the week the bed arrived.  Broken.  Oh, it's just a pain in the ass.  I detailed that pain and I will follow up on this story as it develops.

An Art Talk With The Kids

Speaking of my son, he invited me to come and talk to his fourth grade class.  You see, I'm an artist.  I do portraits and cartooning and Hayden wanted to show off what his dad can do.  They were really fun and receptive.  If only I could find people in the position to pay me for that work who are as enthusiastic as those nine year-olds were.

Never Found In The 80s: The Ramones

Is it possible that a band can seem to have been heard of by so many people and still never have found a large audience?  Unfortunately, yes.  One such band was the Ramones and I profiled them in my latest installment in my guest blogging at Stuck In The 80s.

Pedantic Moment: LOLOLOLOLOLOL

In text language LOL means Laugh Out Loud, so LOLOLOLOLOL means Laugh Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud.  See?  LOL will suffice, so knock it off!

Sylvia Browne's Fail

So, grief vampire Sylvia Browne has proved to be wrong again.  Some years ago, she publicly declared to Amanda Berry's mother that her missing daughter was dead.  Well, we have learned that Sylvia was wrong.  Again.

There has been a lot of backlash against Ms Browne.  And it's about time.

Ben Radford's Fail?

Objections were raised by a frequent listener and thorn in my... no, that's not fair... frequent challenger to my skepticism and positions I take on my show.
In the immediate aftermath of the Boston bombing, Ben Radford noted, rather bluntly, that no psychic had predicted the tragedy.  Ben caught some grief for his comment.  In fact, I passed along one objection I had received about his statement to Ben.

Ben wrote an article after the Amanda Berry revelation addressing his take on the consistent failure of psychics.  He pointed out that skeptics need to use these moments to show the greater public how this aspect of the supernatural just doesn't work.

My listener pointed out that even had psychics predicted those events, they wouldn't have been believed.  He pointed out the apparent bias skeptics have against psychics.  He made some good points that I will have to ponder.

Ponder, I will.  I will also consult with a couple fellow skeptics to see what they think.  I'll explore this again.

Pedantic Moment: Rounds In Clip

Just how many bullets does a hand gun hold and how bad a shot are you?  I did a quick review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns parts 1 and 2 on DVD that has the problems of how many rounds does a clip hold and why can't the cops or bad guys hit their target.  It seems as though weapons have endless supplies of bullets and, when shooting at the hero, the shooters always miss.  What gives?

Movie Recommendation: Bringing Up Baby (1938)

RKO Pictures

A screwball comedy at its timeless best.  This Howard Hawks' comedy featuring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant at their comedic best.  The dialog is fast and screwy.  The pacing is fast and screwy.  And the movie is a lot of fun.  Good for the whole family.

Music heard on the show (These songs are linked above)...

Dimland Radio opening theme song: 'Ram' by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: 'The Ledge' by The Replacements & 'Something To Believe In' by The Ramones
Second ad break bumpers: 'Drinking With An Angel' by The Suburbs & 'Waltz The Halls Always' by Game Theory
Closing song: 'Angler's Treble Hook' by $5 Fiddle

That's it! See you next Saturday night for Dimland Radio 11 Central, midnight Eastern on www.ztalkradio.com you can also download my show from the z talk show archives page. You can email your questions and comments to drdim@dimland.com

It's May And It's F#%king Snowing Out

Spring in Minnesota can be a bit of a challenge.  We can have a Sunday be sunny and 80 degrees and three days later have to shovel snow.  That's what this spring has been like.

It's not the first time this has happened.  I related the story of another such spring when my friend John and I first encountered a fellow we called the Loud Guy.  He came into the bar one cold May night and uttered the immortal phrase, "It's May and it's f#%king snowing out!!"

A Remarkable Cargo Plane Crash

Recently, a 747 cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Afghanistan.  There were two things that struck me about this tragedy.  1) The fellow who captured the video of the plane falling from the sky made virtually no sound as the plane crashed.  Remarkable!  2) Plane crashes are rare.  Very rare!  Exceedingly rare!  And yet this guy was able to capture the event on video.  It's remarkable how there still isn't any film/video footage of a bigfoot that's any better than the Patterson/Gimlin film.

Never Found In The 80s: Four Bands!

Since I did my last regular show, four artists have been featured in my Never Found in the 80s blog series.  They were 54-40, The Barracudas, Game Theory, and Front 242.  I used the four songs featured in the series as my bumpers for the show.

James McCormick Is Going To Prison

Who is James McCormick?  He's the con man who made millions selling bogus bomb detectors to the Iraqi and other world governments.  The "detector" was a dowsing device and, as we all know, dowsing doesn't work.  You do know that, right?

McCormack has been sentenced to ten years in prison and millions of dollars worth of his assets will be confiscated to help offset the money he stole.  He should be locked away for life for all the life and limb his devices surely cost innocent civilians and military personnel.

Read about it here.

George Jones Is Not Playing Possum, He's Really Dead

That's not very respectful, but I wanted to make a funny header for this part.  Sorry, George.

So, on April 26th, George Jones died at age 81.  I talked about his awesome voice, his hard living, and the greatest country song ever recorded.

Movie Recommendation (Television Edition): Breaking Bad (2008 - Present)

AMC

I'm midway through season three and wow!  The first two seasons were a slow build, but season three has me blow away.  I used to lament the lack of good scripted shows on TV.  Not having cable has put me in that state of mind.  Broadcast TV has been virtually taken over by "reality" programming, cable has the excellent scripted shows.  Thankfully, there is Netflix and I can get to watch these quality shows.

Music heard on the show (These songs are linked above)...

Dimland Radio opening theme song: 'Ram' by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: 'One Day In Your Life' by 54-40 & 'Summer Fun' by The Barracudas
Second ad break bumpers: 'Erica's Word' by Game Theory & 'Quite Unusual' by Front 242
Closing song: 'Angler's Treble Hook' by $5 Fiddle
