A Thought Experiment
 

Suppose it is eight years ago. Everything is the same as it was then, except the Ukraine/quid pro quo impeachment situation is happening to Pres. Obama. Same allegations, same evidence, same whistle blower, same everything but it involves Obama and not Trump. Pres. Obama is exactly the same as he was, but for the alleged offenses of enlisting a foreign nation to dig up dirt on his most likely opponent in his bid for re-election in return for financial aid for the military needs of Ukraine.

 

OK? Have you got it?

 

I ask you Pro-Trumpers: Are you going to claim this is all a waste of time and some kind of a witch hunt after Obama?

 

I ask you Anti-Trumpers: Are you going to been calling for the ouster of Pres. Obama?

 

It's just a thought experiment.

A Dimland Radio ARGH! The Dead Bodies Podcast And Constant Interruptions

I recently stopped listening to the Dead Bodies Podcast, a true crime podcast originating in Australian, hosted by journalists Dee Dee Dunleavy and Sharnelle Vella. I just got fed up. Now, I don't want to discourage people from listening to this otherwise interesting and entertaining podcast, but the near constant interruptions the two hosts engaged in had me exasperatingly yelling expletives at my iPhone. I kept shouting, "Shut the...

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: America's Finest?

A Facebook friend and old schoolmate of mine shared this image of a quite fetching female soldier. He included a comment suggesting she is a excellent example of America's finest. Except, is she American? If you can look past the big gun and the nice buns, you will find a clue as to which army this young woman belongs, assuming she isn't just a model and is actually a soldier, that is.

A new documentary examining an infamous concert tragedy and it's aftermath 40 years on will air in December.

 

Another world famous musician promotes his new novel by being interviewed and answering most Googled questions.

 

A 1975 film by Ken Russell based on a certain groundbreaking rock opera to be re-released in the UK and a recent review of the film.

 

Another new song from a new album by a certain legendary rock group to be released in December dropped Friday.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment Bonus: First Darth Vader Cosplay

I did refrain from pointing out he typo.

This moment takes place after the show close, so keep listening or go back and listen if you missed it.

 

I realized I ended the show a couple minutes early so I crammed in another Pedantic Moment. In this moment, I refute the claim in the above image that the cosplayer only had his memories of the original Star Wars film in 1977 to go by when making his costume.

 

Well, I list a few other sources he could have gone to in those dark days before the internet.

A Cave Tour And A Tale Of BS
 

It's weird how memories pop into your head sometimes. I was cleaning the other night when the memory of a family road trip to California in 1976. (Correction of error on show: I was 13 during the trip, not 11.) Part of that trip included a visit to the Cave of the Winds (yes, that's what it is called) in Colorado. It was during the tour of the cave when the tour guide stopped the group in a large section and had the lights turned off.

 

It got very, very dark. We were told it was the darkest dark possible. We were also told of a science experiment done in just such an area of complete darkness. The results of which were told as a little joke for the tour group. And, all these years later, it dawned on me...

 

That story was bullshit.

OK, Boomer And The Facebook Troll

 

The Millennials are pushing back at the Baby Boomers' incessant insults about how they are ruining everything by using the pithy dis, "OK, Boomer." It's picked up steam and has begun to show up all over the social media and the phrase has even made it's way into the New Zealand parliament. 

 

While talking about the dire importance of taking action to stem climate change, New Zealand MP Chloe Swarbrick was heckled by one of the very few attendees to Parliament. Her response was a brief hand wave and a quick utterance of "OK, Boomer" and she continued with her speech.

 

Stephen Cobert also weighed in on the OK, Boomer thing. (Correction of error on show: I said Cobert hosts the Late, Late Show. That is wrong. He hosts the Late Show.)

I posted on Facebook about noticing the phenomenon and a discussion was generated. It quickly led to the predictable response "OK, Boomer" when a FB friend stated the phrase is a form of bigotry. That led to the rise of a troll.

 

I unfriended them and their last salvo was to insult my artistic abilities. The classic move of a troll. I then blocked them. A move that I'm sure made their day. You're welcome, troll.

 

 

The above statement was shared on Facebook. I refrained from commenting on Facebook, but I did mention on the show that if someone wishes to decry the bigotry of using a stereotypical epithet to describe a group of people, that person also shouldn't use a stereotypical epithet when doing so.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Russians Storming The Beaches Of Normandy?

 

A great example of why Millennials have adopted the OK, Boomer attitude.

The above meme, other than be an example of a straw man and selection bias, is factually incorrect in its choice of an example of the heroic 18 year-olds of D-Day. That image shows a Russian soldier.

 

"Class, what is wrong about showing a Russian soldier when referencing the invasion of Normandy? Yes, Dim. Can you tell us?"

"Of course, the Russians were fighting the Germans in Eastern Europe. Normandy is in Western Europe, so the Russians weren't even involved."

"Very good, Dim. 10 points, Slytherin."

A Dimland Radio Science Zero: The House Republicans Of Ohio

 

Apparently, "God did it" will be considered an acceptable answer in science class in the state of Ohio. The Republicans in the House of Ohio passed a bill that will allow students to not be penalized for getting incorrect answers on science exams if their answers are religion based. Gee, I wonder which religion that would be...

 

The Ohio Senate is Republican controlled, so this bill has a good chance of becoming law. Might this become  the next separation of church and state case to go to the courts? Will it be the next Dover Panda Trail?

Sir Anthony Hopkins And The No True Scotsman Fallacy

An a la carte Christian (aren't all of them a la carte?) friend of mine triumphantly shared an article posted in January of this year about how actor Sir Anthony Hopkins turned away from alcohol and atheism and became a Christian.

 

I read the article and followed the links (here to here). I'm not so sure he was ever an atheist.

 

This raises the No True Scotsman fallacy. It's sort of moving the goalpost by responding when some person does something contrary to the stereotypes of a certain group, in turn putting a lie to the stereotype, that that person never really was part of that group. I know I was coming awfully close to commenting that fallacy.

 

Hopkins may have been an atheist who turned to the Christian god, but I'm not sure. It was the quote below attributed to him, that made me wonder if he had been an atheist.

 

"Being an atheist must be like living in a closed cell with no windows."

 

Hm. Must be like? Not is like?

 

I would have thought if he had been an atheist he would know what it is like.

 

He was at an Alcoholics Anonymous (a Christian religion-based group) meeting and he was asked, "Why don't you just trust in God?"

 

I wonder how triumphant my Christian friend would have fell had the actor been asked, "Why don't you just trust in Osiris? ...Zeus? ...Odin? ...Allah?"

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: "These Walls Are Sheathed With Lead."
 

This moment is something I noticed the most recent time I watched the haunted house classic The Legend of Hell House (1973). I watch this movie most Octobers as part of my Halloween month horror movie viewing tradition. Something occurred to me this latest viewing.

My talking about the this pedantic moment meant I had to do quite a bit of spoiling of the movie. I tried not to give everything away.

It has to do with a secret room, electromagnetic radiation, and lead lined walls.

Bullshit Defending Bullshit
 

There's a discussion between two of the characters in Hell House. One is Ms Tanner. She's a psychic and she gets upset at Dr. Barrett's skeptical attitude toward her claims. She goes off on a little diatribe and uses the Bible to bolster her argument.

"Yeah, well. The Bible is bullshit, too, Ms Tanner."

No, Dr. Barrett didn't say that. I did.

An Item For The Gullible

 

Your cell phone will not hurt your naughty bits. This product is merely an attempt to extract money from the gullible. Just go with Fruit of the Loom or Hanes and stop worrying about cell phones and your junk.

Bride Of Frankenstein Is Not A Horror Film

It is often said that Bride Of Frankenstein (1935) is a sequel that is better than the original - Frankenstein (1931). Weeeeellll, maybe. If you like camp.

I prefer my horror movies to be horror and not camp. Bride just doesn't work for me. And the biggest reason it doesn't is Una O'Conner as Minnie.

The camp starts right of the bat with a ludicrously acted prologue meant to catch the audience up on or remind them what had happened in the first film. Then the new story begins. The camp takes a little break when the monster (Boris Karloff) is introduced. The monster is understandably upset and he lashes out at a couple peasants. There is promise that the film could become a monster's revenge against Frankenstein and the people of the village, but as soon as Minnie encounters the monster all pretenses of horror are dropped.

Watch the clip and note the change in the musical score as the scene goes from horror to camp. And watch the way Minnie reacts to seeing the monster had survived the fire. Her reaction is so cartoonish you will wonder if the movie is a comedy.

There are some interesting characters and nice cinematography, but there ain't no horror. Just lots and lots of camp.

However, Neil Gaiman loves Bride, so there's that. 

Cool Thing: Old Hollywood Trickery

How did they do those shots? Were those performers really putting their lives at risk? Didn't anyone hear the phrase "safety first"?

Well, there was some trickery involved and it's very clever and cool.
