A Cave Tour And A Tale Of BS

It's weird how memories pop into your head sometimes. I was cleaning the other night when the memory of a family road trip to California in 1976. (Correction of error on show: I was 13 during the trip, not 11.) Part of that trip included a visit to the Cave of the Winds (yes, that's what it is called) in Colorado. It was during the tour of the cave when the tour guide stopped the group in a large section and had the lights turned off.

It got very, very dark. We were told it was the darkest dark possible. We were also told of a science experiment done in just such an area of complete darkness. The results of which were told as a little joke for the tour group. And, all these years later, it dawned on me...

That story was bullshit.

OK, Boomer And The Facebook Troll

The Millennials are pushing back at the Baby Boomers' incessant insults about how they are ruining everything by using the pithy dis, "OK, Boomer." It's picked up steam and has begun to show up all over the social media and the phrase has even made it's way into the New Zealand parliament.

While talking about the dire importance of taking action to stem climate change, New Zealand MP Chloe Swarbrick was heckled by one of the very few attendees to Parliament. Her response was a brief hand wave and a quick utterance of "OK, Boomer" and she continued with her speech.

Stephen Cobert also weighed in on the OK, Boomer thing. (Correction of error on show: I said Cobert hosts the Late, Late Show. That is wrong. He hosts the Late Show.)

I posted on Facebook about noticing the phenomenon and a discussion was generated. It quickly led to the predictable response "OK, Boomer" when a FB friend stated the phrase is a form of bigotry. That led to the rise of a troll.

I unfriended them and their last salvo was to insult my artistic abilities. The classic move of a troll. I then blocked them. A move that I'm sure made their day. You're welcome, troll.

The above statement was shared on Facebook. I refrained from commenting on Facebook, but I did mention on the show that if someone wishes to decry the bigotry of using a stereotypical epithet to describe a group of people, that person also shouldn't use a stereotypical epithet when doing so.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Russians Storming The Beaches Of Normandy?

A great example of why Millennials have adopted the OK, Boomer attitude.

The above meme, other than be an example of a straw man and selection bias, is factually incorrect in its choice of an example of the heroic 18 year-olds of D-Day. That image shows a Russian soldier.

"Class, what is wrong about showing a Russian soldier when referencing the invasion of Normandy? Yes, Dim. Can you tell us?"

"Of course, the Russians were fighting the Germans in Eastern Europe. Normandy is in Western Europe, so the Russians weren't even involved."

"Very good, Dim. 10 points, Slytherin."

A Dimland Radio Science Zero: The House Republicans Of Ohio

Apparently, "God did it" will be considered an acceptable answer in science class in the state of Ohio. The Republicans in the House of Ohio passed a bill that will allow students to not be penalized for getting incorrect answers on science exams if their answers are religion based. Gee, I wonder which religion that would be...

The Ohio Senate is Republican controlled, so this bill has a good chance of becoming law. Might this become  the next separation of church and state case to go to the courts? Will it be the next Dover Panda Trail?

Sir Anthony Hopkins And The No True Scotsman Fallacy

An a la carte Christian (aren't all of them a la carte?) friend of mine triumphantly shared an article posted in January of this year about how actor Sir Anthony Hopkins turned away from alcohol and atheism and became a Christian.

I read the article and followed the links (here to here). I'm not so sure he was ever an atheist.

This raises the No True Scotsman fallacy. It's sort of moving the goalpost by responding when some person does something contrary to the stereotypes of a certain group, in turn putting a lie to the stereotype, that that person never really was part of that group. I know I was coming awfully close to commenting that fallacy.

Hopkins may have been an atheist who turned to the Christian god, but I'm not sure. It was the quote below attributed to him, that made me wonder if he had been an atheist.

"Being an atheist must be like living in a closed cell with no windows."

Hm. Must be like? Not is like?

I would have thought if he had been an atheist he would know what it is like.

He was at an Alcoholics Anonymous (a Christian religion-based group) meeting and he was asked, "Why don't you just trust in God?"

I wonder how triumphant my Christian friend would have fell had the actor been asked, "Why don't you just trust in Osiris? ...Zeus? ...Odin? ...Allah?"

Tales Of Art School

Every now and again I go full self-indulgent and wax on about some topic or topics that might just be interesting to me. I may have done that the first half of this show.

I got to thinking about my art school days. I talk about a very bad teacher and my desktop doodling. The tales involve German Expressionist Otto Dix and freedom of expression. And there's a bit of how context informs content.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

According to the internets, I'm not the only one who lets out an "argh!" when seeing a certain ad for Apple's iPad Pro. The ad follows a 14 year old girl as she spends her day on her iPad Pro. She chats with friends, writes a blog, makes art, etc. At the end, she's laying on the grass in her back yard and typing away on her tablet.

A nice neighbor lady comes out and asks, "What are you doing on your computer?"

That's when it happens.

"What's a computer?" is how the little shit responds!

ARRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

10 Things A Facebook Friend Thinks Are True

A Facebook friend (more like acquaintance) had posted 10 things he claimed to know were true. The ten things reflected his skeptical nature and his atheism. I thought I'd give my impressions on what he "knows" is true.

I agreed with much of what he stated, but I did express a certain agnosticism on a few items.

I mentioned an InFact video on two simple proofs humans are causing global warming. Here's the link to it.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here's Three Cool Things from this week.

3) Sometimes, at the comic book store, we get a customer who is just so sincerely excited to be getting a particular comic, that we can't help but feel good about it. It was his first purchase of an early issue of Amazing Spider-Man drawn by his favorite artist: Steve Ditko.

2) The issue that customer bought had a really good cover. I noted to myself to remember it for my monthly examination of great covers in my blog for the store. I mentioned the blog to the customer and he let me know that he reads it! His enthusiasm was so heartening, I told him I would write about that cover for February's great cover installment.

1) I have an art commission! A friend asked me to draw Marvel's swamp creature, Man-Thing. He's leaving the design to my discretion and he'll pay me for it!

Movie Recommendation: Singin' In The Rain (1952)

Yep. A musical. Normally, I'm not much of a fan of musicals, but a friend encouraged me to watch this one. I liked it. The song and dance numbers didn't slow the story down, which is one of my problems with most other musicals.

I talked about the skill level of the performers, the directors (the star Gene Kelly also co-directed the movie), and the crew needed to pull off those elaborate production numbers. Very impressive.

More Wisdom Tooth Talk

Something weird happened more than a week after the extraction of my wisdom tooth. A yellowy, purply, old-looking bruise showed up on my neck just below my Adam's Apple. I don't recall the surgeon leaning on my neck and Amy hasn't try to strangle me for a couple months. So, what gives?

It was explained to me by a Facebook friend (sure, he may not be an expert, but his explanation seems very plausible) that the bruise was the result of some of the loosed blood heading inside and pooling in that spot. He had it explained to him by his dentist that after his wisdoms were removed it might appear as though the dentist had been beating on his chest.

More Winter Weather Talk

Again, this winter has been a pain in the ass. Way cold for a few days, then snow, then way cold again. It's very tiring.

So this past week, I had to do some driving in a snowstorm, plenty of shoveling, help get a driver unstuck and broke my shoe in the process. Which led to...

More Sears Talk

I had to buy new shoes, so I went to Sears where I always get my shoes. Just habit, I guess. I talked about my experience at check out and the cashier peppering me with needing my phone number, did I want to be a rewards member, and did I want a Sears credit card. I just wanted to pay for my stuff and get the hell out of there.

More Atheist Talk

I spotted this video clip on the Facebook. It features a dentist and his patient discussing the existence of god and dentists. It's a straw man fallacy created by Christian apologists who don't understand atheists. Watch the clip but beware the inevitable facepalming.

More Farrah Talk

I decided to indulge myself, but, really, isn't my entire show just me indulging myself? Anyway, I noted that February 2nd would have been Farrah Fawcett's 67th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, I read the blog I had written the day she had died.

You can read it here.

The Power Of Art (Thought I Was Gonna Use More Again, Didn't You?)

Thomas Kelly, a 37 year-old, homeless man who suffered from schizophrenia was beaten to death by several Fullerton, CA police officers. Three officers were charged with crimes, two were brought to trial and acquitted. The third had the charges dropped after the acquittal of the other two officers.

I don't know all the particulars, just what I've read on the Wikipedia account. I do know that artist Michael Em captured something powerful in his illustration of the beating. It hurt my heart.

Movie Recommendation: None This Week

You're on your own.

dimland radio 7-13-13 show notes

Oops!  Really?

I recapped the story of my son's bed, which was improperly shipped by Sears.  The bed arrived with a couple broken parts, which I replaced with some plywood, not wanting to go through the arduous process required by Sears to correct their shipping issues.

Well, Sears sent an email asking us how they did.  I let them know they didn't do very well and their automatic response was, "Oops."  Really?  Is that really the way they want to put it?

Randy Travis/Mr. Fantastic?

Mr. Travis and Mr. Fantastic

I saw a recent photograph of Randy Travis the other day.  He's been in the news recently, because, sadly, he's in pretty bad shape.  The recent photo made me think how much Mr. Travis resembles Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) of the Marvel superhero group the Fantastic Four.

A Little Twins Talk

At some point in my talk about Randy Travis I side-tracked myself to talk about my MN Twins horrible record against the Hated Yankees (yes, again) and how they were about to lose another three in a row to the Evil Empire.

Well, they did lose Friday night's game, but, what do you know? Those hapless Twins beat the Hated Yankees on Saturday.  Yay!

Pedantic Moment: Brad Pitt And Wilford Brimley

Actors Brad Pitt and Wilford Brimley have been getting passed around the Twitter-world lately.  Folks are saying that Brad, as he stars in World War Z, and Wilford, as he starred in Cocoon, were both 49.  Well, in my pedantic fashion, I pointed out that Wilford was 50.

I speculated how much I'd enjoy letting my older brother and sister know that they are both older than Wilford when he made The Natural (he was 48 or 49 making that one) and rub it in.  Then I remembered I'm 48.

Now, Children, Stay Away From Atheists

Beware, kids!  Atheists are known to eat babies!

On the Facebook I spotted an image depicting a flyer handed out to, I'm assuming, young Christians warning them to stay away from atheists.  Atheists think they have all the answers, but are so sad, so stay away, kids!  Ha ha.

Mr. Show And Mohammed

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross starred in HBO's Mr. Show, a comedy sketch show. It was very funny and irreverent.  One sketch they did in 1997 featured cartoon vignettes with one being a depiction of Mohammed.  As far as I know, there was no uprising in the Muslim world because of it.  I wondered why that was.

Dave's Story

My friend Dave picked up a copy of Carl Sagan's Demon Hunted World for cheap and he put it on display and the comic store at which he works.  His intention was to give it away to the first person who asked about it.  Someone finally asked.  Dave was delighted.

Movie Recommendation: War Of The Worlds (1953)
Paramount Pictures

This movie set the bar for the science fiction films that followed.  It looks pretty good.  It gets its planetary science wrong, but still.

Music heard on the show...
