Cold Open: Ode To October And The Great Pumpkin

This was a slightly edited replay of a cold open I did last year.  I'm thinking this might become an October tradition.  It chronicles a few of the things I like about October, especially 'It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown', but I did forget one important October event...

The World Series

How I forgot to include the World Series in my ode to October, I don't know.  Well, I rectified that by talking about this year's Fall Classic.  It don't look good for the Detroit Tigers.  They are three games down to the San Fransisco Giants.  I talked about Pablo Sandoval's achievement of hitting three home runs in one game in the World Series.  A feat that has only been done four times before in the history of the series.  Babe Ruth (he did it twice!), Reggie Jackson, and Albert Puljols have done it.  And now they can add "Panda" to the record books.

Our Star Blazers!

My son and I have been watching the animated series Star Blazers on YouTube and I gave my thoughts on the show.  It's silly fun and its regard for science is nonexistent.  They think that Mars is THOUSANDS of light years away from Earth!  Um, not exactly, but who cares?  Just go with it.

Stuck In The 80s Podcast Come To An End?

For seven years, Steve Spears has been producing a podcast and blog dedicated to his favorite decade, the 1980s, called Stuck In The 80s.  Along with his irreverent and very funny cohost, Sean Daly, he would bring us news and interviews and general talk about the pop culture of that decade.  There were other cohosts over the run of the show, but Sean Daly's zaniness was a perfect fit for Steve Spears' more subdued persona.  It was very entertaining.

That's right.  Was.  They just did their last show.  Steve Spears is taking on a new job and will not be able to produce the show as he had been doing.  He was making the show through his former place of work.  He promised he will try to continue doing the podcast in some form, but we'll see.  The blog will continue for at least the next three months.

The final (?) show featured call-ins by long time SIT80s fans and a couple recorded messages (one by a Dr. Dim, ever heard of him?) and lots of memories of the show.  There are 270 plus episodes to listen to on iTunes, so if you haven't heard it there's lots of fun awaiting you.

The 10 Mill Is Probably Safe

There's a new "reality" show on the horizon.  Another one?  Yep, just what we need, right?

Spike TV will be producing another show documenting the attempt to prove Bigfoot really exists.  The contestant who offers "irrefutable evidence" the proves the elusive creature does romp around the woods of just about every state in America will be awarded $10 million dollars.

Given that people have been searching for the cryptid for decades and the areas where it might be are shrinking and the fact that everyone carries a camera with them everywhere they go and no bigfoot has yet been found, I'd say Spike TV's $10 million is safe.

Movie Recommendations: Young Frankenstein (1974)

20th Century Fox

The last really excellent comedy by Mel Brooks.  It's very funny.  Co-written with the movie's star, Gene Wilder, this classic comedy borrows from 'Frankenstein', 'Bride of Frankenstein', and 'Son of Frankenstein'.  All three of those films featured the great Boris Karloff as the monster.  As I said, 'Young Frankenstein' is terrifically funny and entertaining.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)...

Cold Open: It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Such a cool segment especially for a kid's show.

I started out by talking about how great The Peanuts' second holiday special was and is and about how it influenced me. If you've never seen it... What?! You've never seen it? Have you been living in a cave?

Here's a clip of the show that contains elements of what I talked about.

MN Skeptics Meet-up

Next I talked about my attending the MN Skeptics' Newbie Night. It was very good to meet other skeptics and discuss some of what we are skeptical about. I hope to be able to attend more meetings in the future. We'll see what I can do.

The blog for MN Skeptics can be found here.

No Redheaded Sperm Wanted

"What's that? People aren't down with redheads?"

Apparently, the demand for redheaded babies is pretty low. Sperm banks are turning away donors with red hair. Well, I pointed out the neither my wife and I nor my mother and father have red hair, but Amy and I have produced one redhead and my parents have two. Curious.

You can read more about the unwanted sperm here.

REM

REM: Back when I had seen them.

The recent official break-up of the very influential band REM prompted me to talk a bit about the two times I saw them in concert. Talking about their second show reminded me of the angry reaction I had when a fellow art school student asked if I caught the Bruce Springsteen concert that past summer. What does that have to do with REM? You'll have to listen, the show is available for download in the archive.

Here's a clip from REM back in the day.

Movie Recommendation: Shaun Of The Dead (2004)

British humor and kicking zombie ass. What else do I need to say?

Music heard on the show...

Second ad break bumpers: 'Can't Get There From Here' & 'The One I Love' by REM

Wrap up of Halloween Awareness Month

Weapon not included.

I told the story of getting Hayden's costume for this Halloween. He's going as an Ice Wolf Ninja. He spotted the costume in one of those catalogs we get in the mail at this time of year. I talked about having to go back to the store to get the mask.

Halloween storytime

I read three stories from my favorite book from my days as a child, 'Strangely Enough'. I started with 'The Man Who Fell Forever', then 'Haunted Schoolhouse', and, lastly, 'The Gauntlet in the Castle'. All very creepy tales, all undoubtedly nonsense.

Selling out with Gang of Four

The band in the days when they would never allow their songs to be used in ads.

I discussed the notion of musical artists "selling out". Neil Young was one artist who really hated to see other musical artists using their songs to sell products other than their own albums and singles. Another artist (or group of artists) I was sure I would never see used to sell some shameless product is Gang of Four. But the other night, there was an ad for some Xbox thing, I think, and my ears were greeted with the sounds of 'Natural's Not In It'.

I was stunned! Gang of Four was (is?) one of the most anti-consumerism bands I've ever known. And now they're selling some video game system? I've seen it all!

You can check out the song here.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

I love this show! I talked about why it is so great and, as usual, I was spot on. If you haven't seen it... How can you not have seen it? Everybody has seen it! Are in al Qaeda or something?!

Movie Recommendation: Halloween (1978)

Very effective! This lower budget horror films delivers some good scares. I don't know about the other Halloween movies (I do remember seeing Halloween 2, but I don't remember much about it.) The original hits all the notes just right.

Put it in your Netflix queue now!

Music heard on the show...

First ad break bumpers: 'Dreams Reoccurring' by Husker Du & 'Natural's Not In It' by Gang of Four
Second ad break bumpers: 'Dark Entries' by Bauhaus & 'She Never Said' by The Church
