Another Perspective On Justine Damond's  Death

I discussed a blog post that pointed out that media coverage of Justine Damond seems to be different than the coverage of other victims of police violence, such as Philando Castile. Specifically, in Castille's case the news media wasted little time exposing his police record and that of his girlfriend. This has not been the case with Damond. The media hasn't felt compelled to show her and her fiance's warts.

The blogger makes a very good point. As does the writer of this piece.

Here's a very good collection of the details that were available as of July 23. And there has been some news about the patrol car having been claimed to have been slapped by a woman prior to Damond being shot. I haven't seen any news about whether or not the car is pressing charges.

A Different Take On 'Institutionalized'

 

California hardcore punk legends Suicidal Tendencies and their classic teen angst song Institutionalized came to mind earlier this week. I watched the video (see this week's bumper below) and read the lyrics and I noticed my attitude toward the song had changed since I first heard it in the mid-80s. Just a little.

Some Talk About Senator John McCain

 

Senator John McCain has brain cancer. He also gave an impassioned speech to his fellow members of the Senate to get back to public debate and compromise. He voted the send the Republican's idea of a healthcare bill on for debate. He voted no, along with two other Republican senators, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, on the "skinny" bill to repeal Obamacare.

Busy bit of time for the longtime public servant.

There were a few people who pointed out the Sen. McCain is benefiting from taxpayer funded healthcare, while he seems determined to take it away from millions of Americans. Well, Obamacare is still in affection and partly because Sen. McCain voted against repealing it. He might do so in the future, but we'll see.

And, of course, the internet being the internet, there were a few people hoping he would being dying soon and in pain due to that cancer. How compassionate.

 

Senator Amy Klobuchar doesn't agree with the naysayers talk on John McCain. She's a Democrat.

Full Moon Review

 

I briefly went over my reaction to the Keith Moon biography detailing the craziness of the maniac drummer of The Who. I found it difficult to read due to the multiple authors' inability to use the proper verb tense. I also found it tedious and, in the end pathetic and sad.

It's Not True: John McCain Was Pardoned By Nixon

 

With Sen. McCain being in the news, a meme has been floating around claiming he would have been court-martialed for treason had he not been pardoned by Pres. Nixon. It's not true.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here are the Top Three Cool Things that I spotted this week.

 

3) Recently, I begged for more Facebook likes for Dimland Radio. It went from 173 to 181. I looked at how the numbers break down by country. Number one was the US, no surprise there. Number two, at 22 likes, was... You'll have to listen. ;)

 

2) A couple friends and I sat on on the internets earlier this week. We joined Douglas Arthur in recording an episode of his podcast Assault of the Two-Headed Space Mules. We talked about filmmaker George Romero, who died just recently. The show isn't up yet. I will let you know when it is. Douglas says it might be a two-parter.

 

1) A friend gave me The Who Tommy Live on VHS. (Yes, I have a player.) I gave the concert from their 1989 a little review. For the must part , it's an excellent concert. Thanks, Craig! You can watch the Tommy portion of the video here.

A Little More About Amelia Earhart

Last week I mentioned a Ric Gillespie being connected to the whole Earhart survived her last flight theorizing. He is. However, he's not pushing the idea that she and her navigator were taken prisoner by the Japanese military. His idea is more romantic.

A Little Talk About Psychic Predictions
 

I wondered what good the predictions of psychics do. The predictions are only realized to have been correct after the event - it's called retrofitting or retrodicting. Nostradamus predicted Hitler, it is said. He didn't, but people retrofit his predictions after Hitler pulled his shenanigans. Even if he had predicted Hitler, which he didn't, what good did it do? It didn't prevent Hitler, the Nazis, or World War II.

 

Two More Police Shootings That Have Us Scratching Our Heads

 

In Minneapolis, two police involved shooting have gotten plenty of attention. In one incident two dogs were shot. The dogs were not killed, but it appears that they didn't deserve to be shot. It's hard to say for certain. The videos from the homeowners security camera and the officer body cam don't appear to show the dogs acting aggressively. So, shooting them seemed unjustified.

However, there is no audio, so we don't know if the dogs might have been growling. The first dog was wagging its tail, but a wagging tail doesn't always mean the dog should be considered friendly and approachable. It's hard to know what the dogs might do and was going through the mind of that officer.

 

It's even harder to figure out what was going on in the mind of another Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed a woman who had called 911 to report a possible rape. Justine Damond, an Australian woman living with her fiance in Minneapolis, heard what she thought was a rape occurring near their house, so she called 911.

 

The officers who arrived were said to have been startled by a loud noise just prior to Damond approaching the driver's side of the patrol car. The officer seated in the passenger seat, reached across with his weapon in hand. He shot and killed her.

 

How does that happen? As a Facebook friend pointed out, they were responding to a report of a woman being raped and a woman approaches the car, um, might she not be the victim of the rape? What the hell?

 

There are plenty of people wanting to know how this could have happened, including the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here are the Top Three Cool Things that I spotted this week.

 

3) The Minnesota Twins are in a rough stretch of 12 games coming out of the All Star break. They face the Houston Astros, the Hated Yankees, the Detroit Tigers, and the LA Dodgers. Detroit shouldn't be as challenging. As of this writing their record through eight game of the rough stretch is 8-8. I'll take a .500 record.

 

2) Look at the picture Gene Simmons, founding member of the rock band Kiss, recently getting some exercise. He's 67. My Facebook friend Julie Lynn summed up the image brilliantly, thus:

 

"I wanna rock and roll all night... and get a moderate amount of exercise in sturdy shoes and stay hydrated as befits a man of my advanced years every day."

 

1) My friend Chris Brown's math whiz son Ethan was national television demonstrating his Magic Square. Pretty damn cool!

Movie Recommendation: Creepshow (1982)

As a tribute to George Romero, who the world lost very recently, I thought I'd recommend his anthology film of macabre tales. It's an homage to EC Comics, the publisher of horror, suspense, sci-fi, and crime comic books in the 1950s. I think the film captures the look, feel, and attitude of those comic books.

 

Watch for Stephen King, who wrote the film, as a yokel who has a meteor crash on his land. There's a dancing Ed Harris and an F-bomb dropping EG Marshall.
