And Back To The ER I Go

Monday evening, Mom was hit by a pretty severe dizzy spell and then she hit the floor. She landed awfully hard and ended up in the emergency room. Dad got a hold of me at work and I hurried through what I needed to do to get to the hospital.

Mom was pretty shook up and in pain, but as the evening progressed and she was able to get that uncomfortable neck brace removed, she was able to calm down and relax.

In fact, Dad was able to get Mom to have quite the laughing jag after hearing the tales of the false teeth and the wet pants.

She went home that night. And she's feeling better.

Playboy: The Return Of Naked Ladies, Fake Boobs, And Comic Book Art

I had planned to talk about this last week, but time constraints wouldn't allow for it. Which is probably a good thing, because going from talking about sexual assaults and a sexual predatory atmosphere at the fraternity for which I had done illustrations over the past 20 years, to talking about Plaboy magazine, might not have gone over very well.

But, with a week behind us, I went on to talk about how Playboy magazine has brought back the nude photos after a year-long absence. Cooper Hefner, Hugh's son and the magazine's chief creative officer, had said the nudity wasn't the problem with the lackluster sales of the iconic men's magazine. (My suspicion is that there were too many articles.) He also said that the way the naked ladies were presented was dated.

This got me to talking about the idea that the Playboy Playmate was the "girl next door." Well, the exceptionally hot girl next door, but the women did have a quality about them that made them appear real. As time went on, the women lost the girl next door look. Part of that loss, I think was due to breast implants. The images were always touched up. Air-brushed and later Photoshopped, but the breast implants brought another level of unreality. The boobs just didn't look right.

Breast implant technology has improved though. So, I'm told! Ahem! 

That led me to talk about comic book art and one cover in particular. I showed it to my wife and said, "This is what happens when comic book artists are raised in the age of breast implants."

 

The cover was drawn by Joe Madureira, who is an excellent artist. It's a variant cover for Battle Chasers #1 (1998). The woman on the cover obviously has breast implants. Real breasts wouldn't do what they do on that cover. Maybe Madureira wanted that look. Maybe that character does have implants.

However, she's also either very bowlegged or her hips have been dislocated.

Dimland Radio Science Hero: Dan Piraro

 

OK. There are no breast implants or hip displacement here. But there is a positive and correct message presented by cartoonist Dan Piraro. His March 8, 2017 edition of his daily strip Bizarro shows a group meeting of mythical beings. The newest member of the group is the vaccine that causes autism. Truly a mythical thing.

 

For this strip, Dan Piraro has been named a Dimland Radio Science Hero.

Ark Encounter Not Drawing 'Em In

Speaking of myths, the creationist's favorite fairy tale inspired Ark Encounter has not pulled in the numbers of visitors nor the amount of dollars as had been projected. It seems God was far more successful at inspiring two of every species to head to the original ark, but He can't direct enough paying customers to Ken Ham's folly in Kentucky.

I'm shocked! Shoc... No, I'm not.

Truth be told, I probably wouldn't be shocked if it was a roaring success.

Movie Recommendation: The Chase (1966)

 

 

A bit melodramatic. A bit Peyton Place. But watching Marlin Brando as the sheriff of a small Texas town deal with the pettiness, racism, and sniping cruelty of the townsfolk as he attempts to bring in the town's ne'er do well escaped convict unharmed is very entertaining.

There are plenty of familiar faces in this one including EG Marshall, Angie Dickinson, Robert Duvall, Jane Fonda, and Robert Redford. And keep an eye open for a young Paul Williams as one of the town's teenagers.

I had a busy week. I had no time to prerecord the show, so I went live.

Some Baseball Talk

 

My younger celebrated his birthday on Friday, so I gave him a shout out. That led me to talk about big-time pitcher from the 80s and early 90s, Jack Morris whose birthday is also May 16th. I talked about the greatness of Jack Morris' brilliant pitching performance in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series. I maintained that his 10 inning shutout with the series on the line was a gutsier performance than Don Larsen's perfect game in the '56 World Series.

A Good Sunday

 

Some several weeks ago, I broke my Google Nexus 7. It was a bit of a bone-headed move done just the once. So, I set aside money to save up for the repair cost. I finally have enough set aside and Hayden and I took a drive to drop my ailing tablet at the computer hospital.

On the way back, we past Battle Creek Regional Park. I pointed it out to Hayden and said I should take him there sometime. He said, "Why not now?"

Why not? So, I turned around and we spent the next hour or so going for a very pleasant walk, Hayden loved it and would really like to go back today. There is a definite possibility we will. We'll see.

 

The Lost Art Of Counting Change

 

Years and years ago, back before cash registers told the cashiers of today the amount of change to give back to a customer, we had to count the change back. I skill that was taught to me by my father. It is becoming a lost art.

 

I also noted that, until cash money stops being used completely, cashiers need to learn that when handing the change to the customer, it's coins first, then bills. Not the other way around!

 

Westminster Chimes

 

Some weeks ago, while on a walk with my boy, we heard a local church clock begin to sound the hour. This clock, like many others, played a short tune before chiming the hour. It was then that I wondered if there was a name for that little tune.

There is. It's called the Westminster Chimes (or Westminster Quarters or Cambridge Quarters). I must thank Jeff Wagg for his vast knowledge as he instantly knew the answer.

A Stopped Clock...

 

Usually wrong Pat Robertson was right about something. He answered a viewer's question about old earth vs. new earth. Pat understands that the earth is billions of years old and not thousands. So, now, science-denier Ken Hamm wants to debate Pat. That would be fun.

So Sick Of Facebook Tribalism

 

I used to be quite the political conservative some years ago, but now I've pretty much tired of the whole tribalism thing that politics encourages. Well, feeling that way makes Facebook a bit frustrating as so many of my FB friends are so full of that tribalism. They tend to be left in their politics and tend to see in only black or white terms when it comes to Republicans and conservatives.

Case in point, the recent outrage of Ann Coulter has brought out the double standard mentality. Ann posed with a sign stating "#bringourcountryback." Well, she opened herself up to a lot of parody opportunities.

One such parody changed her sign to "If I get 100,000 likes, I'll show my penis." Oh, hahahahaha. That's so funny! Har har har!

Oh, hang on. This is from the group of people who tend to be so sensitive about gender issues, but it's ok to make gender insults against someone we don't like, I guess.  

 

Movie Recommendation TV Edition: Stephen Fry in America (2008)

Writer/actor Stephen Fry drives a London-style cab across the USA. He visits each of the 50 states. Stephen is awesome and so is the series. Check it out, the six episode series is streaming on Netflix.

An Announcement

Nothing so dramatic, but Loud City will be shutting down. Z Talk Radio had worked with Loud City to distribute our shows. Our shows will go on (goon?), but our ability to play music shows will be going away. We can still play independent artists who aren't signed to a major label.

 

I don't what to do the work to support independent artists. Well, it may not be that much wok, but I will not be doing music shows anymore after this month. Next week I will be doing a three hour music show, so get some sleep so you can stay up and boogie. Or just listen.

The Human Species Isn't All That Bad

I hadn't been aware of this phenomenon until fairly recently and I was very impressed and encouraged when I did find out about it. It's the reviews of unusual or very mundane products offered on Amazon.com. I don't know how long this has been going on, but people have been writing very funny, very clever reviews and Amazon has been leaving them up.

Science Vs Not Science

The highly anticipated "debate" between Bill Nye The Science Guy and Ken Ham The Not Science Guy over evolution/creation took place last Tuesday. I have not yet watched the debate, but my hubris was enough that I talked about it anyway. Actually, I talked more about the reaction to the debate, both from before and after it.

Many science-minded skeptics and scientists thought it was a bad idea for Bill to do it, but there are others who think that this sort of confrontation should be done. Ken Ham may never change his mind, but someone else listening in just might.

And, to balance things out, Buzzfeed.com also feature 22 messages from evolution believers to creationists. I responded to those as well. So far, Phil hasn't.

 

Movie Recommendation: Capote (2005)

"Ashton Kutcher survives." Those probably weren't the last words of Philip Seymour Hoffman, but nevertheless it is true, he does still live.

The great actor died this past week and I figured I should recommend one of his best performances out of a vast catalog of great performances. So, 'Capote' it is. Hoffman was awarded the Oscar for his portrayal of writer Truman Capote as he was researching the murder of a Kansas farming family for his non-fiction novel, 'In Cold Blood'.

It's a very good movie and a great performance. But it's hard to find a bad performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
