dimland radio 5-28-16 show notes

A Pretty Spry Old Guy

Last Sunday, my younger brother and I did some painting on our parents' house. The intention was to do the work so our 81 year-old dad wouldn't have to. We don't want that old fart getting up on a ladder. Well, that was the intent anyway, but I blew it when the day before I told Dad we'd be coming the next day to do the work.

We arrived and guess who had ladders out and had already finished scraping one side of the house. That crazy old man.

Bullshit Has Taken Up Residence At HealthPartners

It took a while, and I'm not sure why it was so long, but I was finally able to get in for my physical. This was a new doctor to me, which means there's now yet another man in this world who has put his finger in my ass.

Anyway, I told my new doctor of my chronic back pain. He mentioned that they have a chiropractor on staff and began to suggest setting up a consultation, but my abrupt, immediate, and firm answer was no.

We didn't pursue the matter any further, but I find it very upsetting that non-science based medicine is working its way into actual medical clinics. Even the Great Courses lecture series is peddling this bullshit. They have a course called The Science of Integrative Medicine and it's sponsored by the Mayo Clinic.

Wrong, just wrong.

Dimland Radio ARGH!

During the school year, while driving to work, I can occasionally get stuck behind a school bus. It's not the worst thing in the world, but there is one particular bus that does get under my skin. If I get stuck behind that one it will make a stop at one corner and pick up two or three kids and proceed to the very next corner, a mere 342 feet from that first corner, stop and pick up another two or three kids.

Who planned this out? Why not make one of those corners the one stop? You mean to tell me those precious little urchins can't walk one more block to keep me from making an additional stop?

Not the biggest ARGH, I know. But still.

Not An Example Of Deep Thought, An Example Of Laziness

An example of laziness, not profundity.

The person who made this graphic (above) probably thinks they've made some deep and profound statement on how bad the news media is and has always been. Well, it's more an example of the meme-maker being too god damn lazy to Google the actual Time magazine article explaining why Adolph Hitler was 1938's Man of the Year.

If they had and then read the article they would have realized how stupid this meme is. To quote the article: "More significant was the fact Hitler became in 1938 the greatest threatening force that the democratic, freedom-loving world faces today."

Yeah, that sure sounds like an unreliable news media to me.

Janitorial Tales

Working as a janitor, I encounter some not very thoughtful practices on the part of the people whose properties I clean. A Facebook friend shared a picture he took of a urinal with a big wad of toilet paper in it. He was incredulous that someone would do such a thing. After all, a urinal is not a toilet. I have had to deal with foreign objects dropped into urinals and it just makes me shake my head.

Another head shaker is when a customer drops our service on short notice. When they are told that the contract they signed has a thirty day notice for cancellation of service, they then tells how poor our service had been and they should be able to break the contract.

This happened just this week and I was puzzled as they hadn't complained about bad service before. I had been in touch with them through my monthly email check-ins to see if the customer has any questions. There was no answer last month, let alone any complaint. And less than two weeks ago, I contacted the customers to arrange getting additional building access fobs and our contact said she get some ordered and, again, made no complaints.

Oh, well. I'm assuming a cheaper service is worth making up complaints.
