Kinesio Tape Revisited

As I promised last week, I delved into the whole Kinesio Tape thing again.  I talked about the claims made by the product's website.  The claims have not been thoroughly tested in the 30 plus years the product and taping method have been available.

I relied heavily on Dr. Steven Novella's information on the subject.  You can find what he has to say about this snake oil-ish product here.
Hateful Memes

Really?  The ONLY reason?  Is this an example of liberal nuance?
I talked quite a bit about a couple particularly unfair and hateful memes that I spotted on my Facebook feed.  I continue to be dismayed by the lack of appreciation of nuance from the Left.  Of course, I realize that my Facebook friends do not represent everyone with a more liberal outlook.  I kept that in mind as I talked about the broad brush with which some of my FB friends paint the GOP and conservatives.

Atheist Billboards Taken Down

Two billboards put up in Charlotte, NC by American Atheists, Inc. have been removed.  The billboards' messages pointed out the more irrational aspects of Christianity and Mormonism, the faiths of the two candidates for President of the United States.

After several ugly and poorly written threats from the ever tolerant religious folks who disagreed with the messages had been received by the American Atheists, it was decided to remove the signs.  An American Atheists' spokesperson stated that the removal wasn't because of threats against their organization, but rather because of the threats the billboard company had been receiving.

Read more about the loving responses some of our religious brethren felt necessary to hurl at the more rational among us here.

A Tattoo Where?!

Ok, there's a not unattractive woman out there who thinks it's a great idea to have her...How shall I say it?  Her bottom tattooed.  No, not quite.  I mean lots of people get tattoos on the butts.  No, this gal had her anus tattooed.  (My son just read this as I wrote it and responded, "That's not cool!")  It's true.  There's video of her displaying the tattoo and having it done and remarking on how great it feels.  It takes all kinds.

The not safe for work (or my son) video can be seen here.

I took the opportunity to talk about a half-ass (no pun intended) hypothesis on why some of the early tattooed folks have had to up the ante on tattooing and piercing.  About 20 years ago, for whatever reason, virtually EVERY person had to get a tattoo.  My idea is that the more extreme tattooing began as a result of grannies and 16 year-old highschoolers all getting their tats.

Me?  I'm a rebel.  No part of my body is tattooed or pierced.
Movie Recommendation: The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (1948)

Warner Bros.
Here is an excellent classic film on what gold can do to a man's outlook on life.  It stars Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston in his Academy Award winning performance.  It was directed by Walter's son, John Huston, who makes several cameo appearances as the rich American whom Bogart puts the "bite" on multiple times early in the film.  Also, look for a very young Robert Blake as the lottery ticket salesman.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)...

First ad break bumpers: 'I Don't Remember' by Peter Gabriel & 'The Analog Kid' by Rush

Breaking A Rule And Upsetting A Listener

So, here's what I did...

When I started off the show, I got right into talking about the Olympic games, specifically the closing ceremonies.  However, before I got to that subject, it popped into my head to mention that claims of Kinesio Tape isn't exactly backed by science.  In doing so, I called it "woo."  I violated my rule of not using that term on my show.  I figure it isn't the best way to influence people into thinking rationally.

Not only that, but I upset a listener in chat who told me I didn't know what the claims were about Kinesio Tape and that I didn't exactly back up my claim that it is woo.  He was right.  It was an of the top of my head moment as I was trying to recall what I had heard on a recent Skeptic's Guide To The Universe Podcast.  I didn't have that info written down and I should have.

That still doesn't make the claims of Kinesio Tape valid.  I will address this next week.  In the meantime, read Dr. Steven Novella's piece on this tape here.

Olympic Closing Ceremonies Observations

I spent a good deal of the show making observations of the Closing Ceremonies of the 2012 London Summer Olympics.  I liked much of it and I did talk about some of the aspects I like, but definitely got into a few things that I didn't like.  I think that's enough, if I get into it any more it will end up taking too much space.

A Pedantic Moment: Coleslaw?

An ad for Ford trucks featuring Mike Rowe has a beefy fellow asking if they can fill the back of the truck with coleslaw.  Really?  Coleslaw?  That's what they came up with?

Revising History

There those who carry a lot of guilt about Pres. Harry Truman's decision to drop atomic bombs, one each, on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to force an end of WWII.  Revisionists claim that the Japanese were about to surrender is untrue.  The actual history does not bear that up.

This video gives a realistic view of the situation and horrible choices Pres. Truman faced 67 years ago.

Movie Recommendation: The Sting (1973)

  Universal Studios

This best picture winner is excellent entertainment.  All about the big con and, if you haven't seen it before, it'll con you good!.

Each Saturday in August I will be playing music after my regular show.  This show went fine until the last set of songs.  At that point, my computer went wonky and I just dropped off the air.  I fixed the wonkiness (I think), but by then it was too late, so I just let that be the end. Sex Talk And Losing My Train Of Thought

Prior to my going on the air, I caught a little of the replay of another Z Talk show, Hot & Bothered.  Joe and Stacy and their guest were talking sex.  It was a little more than I could handle.
Then something popped into my head to talk about.  It had to do with my son's hobby of searching Google images and how once we found some nudie shots of some woman.  But that wasn't what popped into my head.  I actually lost my train of thought and couldn't think of what had sent me on a tangent.

I remember now, but I'll make you wait until next Saturday.

A Tale Of A Mini Vacation

Amy, Hayden, and I went camping last weekend.  That's why I didn't do a show last Saturday.  I told the story of the trip.  We went to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to camp and took in a few local sites.  I spoke of the Split Rock Lighthouse, Lake Superior, hauling in camping equipment, swimming in Lake Superior, star-gazing, an overnight thunder storm, humming birds, bats, muskrat, Gooseberry Falls, a C-130 Hercules aircraft, skipping stones, roasted marshmellows, and so much more.

Sick Not Seek

Having been outraged by the way the news readings were pronouncing Sikh, the religious sect that is an offshoot of Islam and had recently been thrust in the news due to a mass killing event, as "sick" and not "seek."  I had heard it as "seek" all my life, until Friday morning.  Apparently, the proper way to say it is "sick."

Read about how to say Sikh here.

Images From Mars

Curiosity, the Mars rover, landed on the Red Planet recently and some cool pictures have been coming back from it.  And, from what I understand, even more awesome pictures are on the way.  Pictures from the surface of another planet!  So cool!

I also talked about an image depicting Earth, Venus, and Jupiter in the Martian sky.  I had shared the image on my Facebook page and an FB friend burst that bubble by posting a link to Phil Plait's blog exposing image as a fake.

Well, I get can caught, too.  Here's the Bad Astronomer's explanation of the image.

Movie Recommendation: Paths Of Glory (1957)

Bryna Productions

Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas, this anti-war film beautifully depicts the futility and insanity of war.  Ordered on an impossible mission during WW1, Douglas is forced to defend three of his men on charges of cowardice for failing to take the too well defended German position.  An excellent film!
