Sports! Yes, Again.

Concerning the Minnesota Vikings latest appearance in the NFC Championship game, how about I keep it simple and sum it up with an often used phrase in the Fitzsimons family? OK? Here goes:

Well, at least they won't lose the Superbowl.

Sigh. 

Salt For The Wound 

 

As if the Vikings being the Vikings wasn't bad enough, Mother Nature decided that after such a humiliating defeat the Twin Cities might really enjoy have about a foot of snow dropped on them.
 

It was so much fun having to have to remove snow at home, at my parent's, and at work over the course of three days.

 

Why do we live here?

 

Bragging rights. 

That "Healing" Center Offers What, Now?

  

I will see if I can get a picture. Until then you'll just have to take my word for it. Well, my friend's word, as I haven't seen it either.

 

It the window of a particular "healing" center is listed what they have to offer: Acupuncture, Herbs, Medicine, Miracles. Miracles? Why not skip the other three and just go with the miracles? What good are herbs if you can work miracles?

Dimland Radio Science Hero: Mr. Show

Long, long ago in the 1990s, HBO aired a sketch comedy program filled with irreverent, biting, satirical, and very funny pokes at society. It was called Mr. Show with Bob & David. And I loved it!

 

I've been watching the shows on YouTube. In one episode, they do an excellent send up of psychics. They nailed just how just of not real psychic powers really are. I liked it so much I decided to declare the show Dimland Radio Science Heroes.

 

Favorite Movies Of "All Time?"

  

There's a Facebook group dedicated to discussing unusual movies. It's called Incredibly Strange Films and it usually has some very intriguing posts. One member of the group chimed in asking us to list our top five all time favorite movies (they didn't have to be strange). He started it off with his list of five. None of the films on his list was older than eight years. I commented that that was a rather limited list.

 

But, those might just be his five all time favorites.

 

Mine? I'm glad you. It really is impossible for me to narrow it down to five, but these are what I've come up with. None are out of the mainstream, but all are films I can (and have) watch again and again.

 

Ask me in a couple weeks and the list might be different.

3) A friend from my art school days has posted a couple of his sketches he's done recently and they are pretty damn darn good!

 

 

2) On Showtime you can catch a documentary of one of my favorite bands. It's called XTC: This Is Pop. It's a little on the short side, but I think it's pretty darn good!

 

1) With all the snow this week, I helped my next door neighbor by clearing the alley access to her garage, as well as her front sidewalk and stairs. I always do this, because she's older and shouldn't have to struggle with all that snow. She left a Thank You card (and some money) on our porch. I'd do it even if she didn't gave us any money. And the thank you felt pretty darn good!

What The Happened Last Week?

Well, I talked over a sounder and forgot to take my second break. I just kept talking.

 

Then I changed Morgan Freeman's name to Martin Freeman. Whoops.

Sports!

It's finally happened! A break in a playoff game went the Minnesota Vikings' way. 50 plus years of playoff and Superbowl futility and several breaks going the way of the Vikes' opponents.

 

In case you live in a cave or are a member of al qaeda, you may not know about what is now called the Minneapolis Miracle. Well, I let you know about this show.

 

I talk all about it, my reaction, the reaction of Minnesota fans, etc. I also give a little advice to those who are so dismissive of sports fans. 

Fun With A Conspiracy Theorist

   

I posted the internet comic strip you see above to my Facebook. And it brought a response by a conspiracy theorist claiming the President doesn't even have full clearance to all areas of Area 51. Friend of the show, Craig, and I decided to have some fun responding to his comment.

 

We must have had too much fun, because the fellow making those claims deleted his comment and our teasing was lost.

 

The next day he posted a curious message on his Facebook feed. 

I Liked Star Wars: The Last Jedi

  

I wrote a review on the Warehouse Find blog, in which I admonished some Star Wars fans' negativity. But, I guess they are entitled to their opinions.

I talked about what a bad idea it is to turn you back on your opponent when in a sword fight. Why would you expose your back, however briefly, while in a duel? It might looks cool to the audience, but it's still just a bad idea.

Casey At The Bat

Longtime listeners know I can't go very many shows with talking about The Who. And it's been a whole week.

I was invited to help some folks out in a round of that bar trivia thing. The featured topic was going to be the world's greatest rock band: Nickelback. No, wait. What am I saying?!

Of course, it was The Who and I was brought in as a ringer. But, would I turn out to be mighty Casey and strike out? Would there be joy in Mudville? 

Roseanne Will Be A Trump Supporter

The return of the hit sitcom Roseanne is already raising some eyebrows. Its controversial star has stated that the title character will be a Trump supporter. She feels it would be "realistic" because the series is about a blue collar family and plenty of blue collar folks voted for Trump.

I speculated that perhaps Roseanne Barr might be trying to show blue collar viewers that it would be OK to admit they'd made a mistake, if her character came to realize that through the course of the series.

I'll never know. I didn't watch the show when it aired in the late 80s into the 90s and I don't intend to watch it when it returns.

This article gives more info and also notes that Barr herself had been a supporter of Trump. 

Pedantic Moment: The Shawshank Redemption

 
I warned about spoilers before I got into what I'm pedantic about when it comes to the great, great movie: The Shawshank Redemption.

What was I pedantic about? You'll have to listen. Here's a hint. It has to do with a poster and a plastic bundle.

By the way, I kept calling Morgan Freeman, Martin Freeman. I have a drug problem. 

Dimland Radio Science Zero: Charlie Daniels

  

Well, country music star, Charlie Daniels, stopped singing about the devil going to Georgia to make deals for souls long enough to warn Taco Bell about their latest ad campaign. Taco Bell is airing TV ads with a conspiracy theory theme. Mr. Daniels thinks that's a bad idea.

The internet had a little fun with him. And I named him a Dimland Radio Science Zero.

Dimland Radio Science Hero: David Mitchell & Robert Webb

  

I've know about these two British actors. They had a BBC2 show called 'That Mitchell And Webb Look'. It's a sketch comedy show featuring some excellent satire. They send up the Princess Diana death conspiracy, the moon landing hoax, aliens, and homeopathy.

For those excellent send-ups, they are Dimland Radio Science Heroes.

My Sports Prediction

 
When it comes to the MN Vikings my rational thoughts go right out the window. 40 plus years of watching the Vikes come up short, especially when some of those years the team was so damn good. Vikes fans are a little wary. And I'm very wary.

With that wariness in mind, I made my prediction about how the Vikings will do this postseason.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here are the Top Three Cool Things from this week.

3) Despite my wariness, the MN Vikings being in the playoffs is pretty cool.

2) I made to the MN Skeptics Meet-Up on Thursday despite my doubts earlier in the day of being able to make it. But I did make it.

1) My son has three photograph in an art exhibit at a local college. The exhibit is for area high schools with outstanding art programs. My boy got an Honorable Mention. His photographs in the exhibit can be seen just below this sentence.

Movie Recommendation: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

It's A New Year...Again

As I get older, these years just go by faster and faster. Why it seems just yesterday I was making the same resolution I make every year. And it's tradition for me to talk about that very specific resolution, which I have yet to break. 

Should We Really Feel Guilt About Our Guilty Pleasures? 

I don't think people should feel embarrassed or guilty for liking something other people might think is silly or strange. Hey, your 53 and you like old toys and comic books? That's cool. You like what you like. As long as you aren't causing harm to others, why feel shame.

So what if you like ABBA. Everybody should. In fact, those who don't ought to fell guilty. The weirdos. 

ABBA, Not Exactly A Deep Cuts Band

 
My talk about guilty pleasures led me to talk about a deep dive I did on ABBA's music. I listened to all their albums through Spotify. It turns out that the Swedish supergroup is more a singles band than an album one.

If you know their hits, you've pretty much got it. There might been a deep cut or two, but really their singles are so damn good, you don't have to dig for much more. Unless you want to, then go for it.

Peppermint Lump

 
I thought I knew virtually everything there was to know about the music produced by Pete Townshend. Well, I was wrong. In 1979, Pete teamed up with an 11 year old girl singer, Angie (Angela Porter) and produced pretty catchy bit of pop tunage.

I've been obsessing on the song since I learned about it this past Tuesday. It's called Peppermint Lump. The little girl lead vocals aren't great, but that doesn't stop me from liking it. See the Three Cool Things for the link below.

Conspiracy Theory Response Not Sent

  

I have more than 2,400 Facebook friends. Many of them skeptics. Some think themselves to be skeptics but they are actually conspiracy theorists. One of them posted some conspiracy nonsense of personal incredulity trying to say 9/11 was an inside job.

I didn't unfriend the fellow, but I wrote a response to one of his posts. I didn't send it though. Some hills you just don't want to die on.

Instead I posted the following XKCD comic strip:

I also mentioned this strip on the show. I considered using it as a response:

I'm A Little Slow And Oregon's New Pumping Gas Policy 

Oregon state has joined most of the rest of the country in allowing people to pump their own gas. There were several comments and memes spreading around the internet poking fun of Oregonians.

One such fun poker image (see above) left me baffled for quite some time. My Facebook friend refused to explain the joke when I expressed It didn't understand the "green" gas reference.

The answer did come to me. Eventually.

3) Stan Lee turned 95 on December 28. Yes, that wasn't this past week, but it's still cool. I blogged about The Man and his importance in the lives of comic book fans and creators.
