Let It Snow

It wasn't the biggest snowfall we've ever gotta in the Twin Cities, but the timing did make it tricky. I decided to do my Friday night job over the weekend. That job is cleaning an office building. Mentioning that led to...

Tales From The Janitor's Closet

This segment was pretty much just me going on about some things office workers do that make janitors grumble. There always seems to be at least one person determined to make the janitor's job harder. the jerks.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Good Will Hunting

We watched Good Will Hunting a couple weeks ago. It's a good movie. Oh, sure, he's a math genius, but Good Will doesn't know how to mop. As if!

And I suggest a possible career path Good Will's best friend, played by Ben Affleck, might pursue.

Sports!

I mentioned last week that the Minnesota Vikings were (note that, were) in the playoffs. They managed to beat the New Orleans Saints and move on to San Francisco to take on the 49ers. I predicted the Vikes would lose. They did.

Well, at least they won't lose the Super Bowl.

A Dimland Radio Science Zero Or This Can't Be What Gwyneth's Vaj Smells Like

Goop, the website designed to extract money from the gullible, has a new product. It's a scented candle that Goop claims smells like their leader's vagina. It's called 'This Smells Like My Vagina'. The vagina in question belongs to America's princess Gwyneth Paltrow.

How does Goop come up with these ideas?

But it's a misrepresentation. It's just some perfume, not the smell of Gwen's genitals.

I imagined how a particular customer might have been disappointed by the bait and switch.

Cool Thing: Behind The Scenes Photos From Harry Potter Movies

The Harry Potter movie series (and books) are among my favorites. So, I thought it would be of interest to share this site which shows some of the behind the scenes magic. It's cool.

More Busy And Interesting Times

It was a harrowing week. I didn't get my show prep as finalized as I normally do, so I was kind of winging it through the show. I did have bullet points, but not much else written down.

It was busy because a full time employee who cleans several properties was in the hospital with the flu. Get your flu shot! And the supervisor and I had lots of fill in work to do.

It was harrowing because my dad has been ill with an infection since Christmas and this week saw me doing a lot of visits. I had to get Dad to a doctor's appointment, convince him to use his damn cane, get groceries, do laundry. All while worrying these two 80-somethimngs aren't going to be able to stay in their house much longer.

Big decisions are gonna have to be made and soon.

Cool Thing: Minnesota Vikings Are In The Playoffs And...

Photo: USA Today
They beat the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans in their first playoff game of 2020. It was very surprising, because even the most diehard fan believed a win there over such a tough opponent would be highly unlikely. But the Vikes did indeed rise to the occasion and beat dem Saints.

The following week was filled with speculation on how well the Vikes would fair against the San Francisco 49ers. Confidence on the part of the fans and local sports analysts began to soar as the week went on. The Saints were the toughest foe of this postseason and our boys beat them. They surely can beat the Niners. No problem!

Let me state the Dimland Radio Vikings/Fans/Analysts correlation:

The higher the confidence on the part of fans and analyst of a Vikings playoff victory, the greater the likelihood the Vikings will lose.

I predicted a Vikings loss to the Niners. (But I always predict the Vikings will lose, so this is no big deal.)

The game was played yesterday.

Oh, well. At least they won't lose the Super Bowl.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

My ARGH! is the frequency of which I am smelling marijuana, pot, weed, or whatever the kids are calling it these days. I smell it when driving almost everyday. I smell it when shopping for groceries. I find it troubling.

I'm not a prude. I have had some experiences smoking the stuff, but it never did all that much for and I feel no desire to spark up.

But I had a request for pot users. A couple actually. One is to not drive under the influence, please. The other: Go with the edibles. I won't have to smell those.

Moms. Keeping Us Humble

I showed the Minnesota Niche video on the MN Skeptics meet up group to my parents. Dad seemed mildly impressed, but he was still sick so that may have tempered his reaction.

Mom, on the other hand...

Let's Check In On This...

It's not getting any funnier.
No, I'm not recycling a old blog. This is starting the same way as last week's because I decided to keep an eye on how well this, what looks like a piece of crap, is doing.

As of this writing, the movie has grossed worldwide $35.5 million. It cost an estimated $42 million to make. Hey, this misfire will probably make its money back! Can we hope for a sequel?

What Better Way To Start The New Year?

It was 5:30am on New Year's Day when I got the call from my dad. Mom had run out of a pain medicine she was taking (she wasn't following  the prescription and was taking an extra now and again) and she began to have withdrawal problems. Dad and I took her to the ER.

It was a short visit and Mom got set back on track with her medication. She's learned a valuable lesson. I hope.

Lowering Expectations?

I received an official Minnesota Vikings desktop calendar as part of our family's tradition of a dice game gift exchange. The calendar is 365 days of facts and trivia. Below is from January 1st:

Starting the year focusing on mediocrity. How Minnesota Vikings.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!: Is New York City Trying To Get Everyone To Hate It?

The TV tradition in America is to show the ball drop in New York's Times Square "live" as the new year comes in. The shows that broadcast TV offers (Fox and ABC) were the ones we looked at. We decided to stay with Fox. Neither offer us anything we really like, we just tuned in for the ball drop.

So, it dropped, "Happy New Year!" Then people start making out. Yuck. And our ears are graced with with the traditional singing of Auld Lang... Not so fast!

Nope. What song was played?

New York, New York!

ARGH!
Except, when preparing these show notes, I looked for video to back up my point. I found video of the moment. And I found that Auld Lang Syne was indeed played immediately after the new year came in. It was greatly truncated. But it played.

I'm still aggravated by the insertion of New York, New York. It interrupted the traditional song. Is there something wrong with letting the song play out, New York?

And I'm aggravated because I'll have to admit I was wrong on next week's show.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: It's An Initialism, Smarty-pants!

Inspired by one of this week's Three Cool Things is a Pedantic Moment I had while watching a very funny clip from the UK's That Mitchell And Webb Look. It's a sketch comedy show that, from what I've seen of it, is awfully funny.

The sketch is called Grammar Nazi (at least on YouTube, it is) and it features a boss doling out swift retribution on his employees' errors in grammar. Except before he hands out his first harsh reaction, he makes a grammar error. He calls the abbreviation HHH an acronym. It's not. It's an initialism.

An acronym is an abbreviation of a multi-word title using the initials of each word in the title to spell out another word. For example: SCUBA or SNAFU. An intitialism follows the same setup, but the letters do not spell out a word. For example: FBI or KGB.

Some Grammar Nazi!

Three Cool Things

1) This cool thing is about my love of the British panel/game show. Not exactly a game show, but not the traditional panel show either. There's QI, Would I Lie To You?, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, and a few others. My favorite of the shows is QI and my favorite of the panel guests is Dave Mitchell.

2) China just landed a probe on the far side of the moon. Sure, it could be a Communist invasion, but it's very cool!

Bonus Cool Thing: It's never cool when someone does, but a freaky coincidence can be damn cool. Mean Gene Okerlund, Daryl "The Captain" Dragon, and Bob "Super Dave Osborne" Einstein all died on January 2nd. I know that's three, but don't start with the celebrities dies in threes nonsense. Sometimes they happen to cluster into a set of three.

Anyway, the freaky coincidence with these three deaths is that they were all 76 years old when they died.

That's Not How You Promote A Game

The 2018/19 version of the constant futility that is the MN Vikings is now in its pre-season and the local news was making sure all their viewers would be tuning in. I'm reasonably sure the game was on that station.

Well, a Packer fan must have chosen the game footage of the Vikings at play. The video showed tight end Kyle Rudolph dropping a pass from three different angles. That wouldn't have been my choice. I would have gone with the Minneapolis (or Minnesota) Miracle play.

If the person wasn't a Packer fan, maybe they were just lowering expectations.

Oh, Those Young People And Their Phones

A group of sorority sisters took in a ballgame in Arizona and they ended up getting a bit of the needle from the fellows in the booth. You see, the young women didn't seem as interested in the game as they were in their phone and taking selfies.

The needling was funny, however I found out later that it was unfair because the fans were asked to take selfies and to text them to the ballgame control room (or whatever you'd call it) and their pics might be shown in the park. I didn't know that bit when I recorded the show, so I'll do a follow up next week.

There was a call of juvenoia, that's what kids today call it when the old folks go on about kids today. Well, kids today need to understand that breaking out the needle is what we older folks are supposed to do every now and then.

I tell ya. Kids today.

Notice Anything About These Two Logos?

There's a couple family-owned car dealerships in the Twin Cities under the name Barnett. They produce television ads that feature the Barnett sons and their dad. The ads are silly and they poke fun at themselves. I think the ads are cute. Here's one.

Recently, the poster for the 1971 film Shaft popped up on my Facebook page. I noticed something about the title logo and the logo for Barnett. They are very similar. It was an odd choice, but I like it.

And if you saw the Barnett family, you'd see they make an odd pairing with the black private dick that's a sex machine with all the chicks.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Recognize This Man Who Was Elected President Four Times?

Does something look not right about the above meme? Without getting into the political claims made about this handsome young man from the days of yore, there's something wrong about this Franklin Delano Roosevelt piece. That's not FDR.

It's Franklin Delano Roosevelt Junior.

This is what the young FDR looking like.

It's Not True: Go Fund Me Account For Christhian Rivera

I have a couple pretty staunch Trump supporters as Facebook friends. One in particular, with whom I went to high school even, really likes to post items showing her support and her distrust of the "mainstream" media.

This past week she shared this...

Sigh.

Snopes, will you take this one for me?

A Dimland Radio Science Zero: Jimmy Kimmel

Two time Dimland Radio Science Hero Jimmy Kimmel is now being declared a Science Zero for his show's "see how dumb Americans are" videos. There are two of these videos that I've spotted: One challenges people on the street to give the name of a book, any book. The other challenges other people on the street to identify a country, any country, on a map of the world.

Of course, they only show the few people they found who couldn't meet the challenges, except the map video does feature a young boy who identifies several countries. What bothers me about these videos is they are misleading. After all, if the audience was as ignorant as the people in the videos, the bit wouldn't be funny.

It also bugs me that others out in internet land will make these videos go viral by sharing them and declaring America is going to hell in a hand basket and many people hop right on the "we're doomed" bandwagon.

For those reasons, I declared Jimmy Kimmel a Dimland Radio Science Zero.

Who Said What About Who?

I read an interesting quote of praise about a surprising person by a surprising person. I was attempting to show how people aren't an easily categorized as we tend to make them.

Three Cool Things

1) There are a series of art books that feature the work of great comic book artists. There's a new one out with the work of John Byrne and I'd love to own it.

2) An art school friend of mine shared a picture of a brilliantly done illustration of dolphins. I was going to post it here, but it appears she took it down. You'll just talk to take my word about how cool it is.

3) My friend Douglas Arthur has finally posted his Assault of the 2-Headed Space Mules podcast featuring the colossal cover song quiz. It's a blast!
