dimland radio 1-27-18 show notes

Sports! Yes, Again.

Concerning the Minnesota Vikings latest appearance in the NFC Championship game, how about I keep it simple and sum it up with an often used phrase in the Fitzsimons family? OK? Here goes:

Well, at least they won't lose the Superbowl.

Sigh.

Salt For The Wound

As if the Vikings being the Vikings wasn't bad enough, Mother Nature decided that after such a humiliating defeat the Twin Cities might really enjoy have about a foot of snow dropped on them.

It was so much fun having to have to remove snow at home, at my parent's, and at work over the course of three days.

Why do we live here?

Bragging rights.

That "Healing" Center Offers What, Now?

I will see if I can get a picture. Until then you'll just have to take my word for it. Well, my friend's word, as I haven't seen it either.

It the window of a particular "healing" center is listed what they have to offer: Acupuncture, Herbs, Medicine, Miracles. Miracles? Why not skip the other three and just go with the miracles? What good are herbs if you can work miracles?

Dimland Radio Science Hero: Mr. Show

Long, long ago in the 1990s, HBO aired a sketch comedy program filled with irreverent, biting, satirical, and very funny pokes at society. It was called Mr. Show with Bob & David. And I loved it!

I've been watching the shows on YouTube. In one episode, they do an excellent send up of psychics. They nailed just how just of not real psychic powers really are. I liked it so much I decided to declare the show Dimland Radio Science Heroes.

Favorite Movies Of "All Time?"

There's a Facebook group dedicated to discussing unusual movies. It's called Incredibly Strange Films and it usually has some very intriguing posts. One member of the group chimed in asking us to list our top five all time favorite movies (they didn't have to be strange). He started it off with his list of five. None of the films on his list was older than eight years. I commented that that was a rather limited list.

But, those might just be his five all time favorites.

Mine? I'm glad you. It really is impossible for me to narrow it down to five, but these are what I've come up with. None are out of the mainstream, but all are films I can (and have) watch again and again.

Ask me in a couple weeks and the list might be different.

Here they are:

Jaws (1975)
Wizard of Oz (1939)
Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here's Three Cool Things from this week.

Lou Flores © 2018

3) A friend from my art school days has posted a couple of his sketches he's done recently and they are pretty damn darn good!

2) On Showtime you can catch a documentary of one of my favorite bands. It's called XTC: This Is Pop. It's a little on the short side, but I think it's pretty darn good!

1) With all the snow this week, I helped my next door neighbor by clearing the alley access to her garage, as well as her front sidewalk and stairs. I always do this, because she's older and shouldn't have to struggle with all that snow. She left a Thank You card (and some money) on our porch. I'd do it even if she didn't gave us any money. And the thank you felt pretty darn good!

Movie Recommendation: None

I mentioned five films in my faves. Pick one of them.

Happy Anniversary!

My wife and I just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary on October 13th. We dropped the kid at my parents' house and we took in a comedy show. The headliner was Dana Gould and we had a great time. We were right in the front row, so there were a couple of somewhat awkward, yet hilarious, moments.

Gould is very funny and he is the host of my current favorite podcast: The Dana Gould Hour. It's a monthly (more or less) podcast that is never just an hour. Very funny and thought-provoking stuff. It's on iTunes. Check it out.

We Can Say What Now On TV?

Just when you thought the Republican candidate couldn't get any lower, he does. Audio and video came out of him talking about his celebrity giving him ability to just do whatever he wants to women. Sure, it's bragging bullshit, but it's crude and base and, if he actually does what he claims, illegal.

So, in response to this revelation, First Lady Michelle Obama gave a very excellent and heartfelt speech on Trump's use of language, his attitude toward women, and how his is a mindset this nation, and world, should not tolerate.

Hear! Hear!

But, as I heard a local talk radio host ask, how do the Obama's square that correct stance and attitude with having rap recording artists, such as Ludacris, as guests at the White House? I hope I don't appear that I'm not painting rap music with a broad brush, I know it has a wide range of styles and topics, but would Ludacris maybe have a song or two with lyrics that contain what could be euphemistically called "locker room talk"?

Curious.

Also curious is the breaking down of the barrier of not referring to a woman's genitalia as a "pussy" on television. Although most news outlets were careful not to say it, some did. And Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show pulled a lot of comedy gold out of it.

What would George Carlin think?

The MN Vikings Are Undefeated, So Far

I have been a Vikings fan for many years, more than 40 in fact. And, as encouraging as this 5 - 0 start is, I know one thing that fans can always count on when it comes to the Vikings: They never fail to disappoint.

So, with that in mind, in my latest blog on Warehouse Find, the official blog of Nostalgia Zone, focus on just how this team builds up their fans' hope and dashes them. Four lost Superbowls and five lost NFC Championships doesn't seem to deter some people.

Well, I'm not hopping on that bandwagon until a week after they win the Superbowl.

Movie Recommendation: From Hell (2001)

I have recommended this one before, but I think it's a worthy, stylish, if bleak, film. Perfect for October!

Too Much Salt

Not table salt, I was talking about sidewalk salt or ice melt. The stuff is great for taking ice off of sidewalks and roadways, but if too much is put down it's a real pain in the ass to clean up. And this week I had a major pain in the ass clean up to do. The building I clean on Tuesday nights had about four times as much ice melt put down as was necessary to do the job. It added an hour to my night, because I had to sweep the excess off the walkways and I had lots of extra vacuuming. The damn stuff was tracked all throughout the building. I was not happy.

Vikings Disappoint Again

Sure, the Minnesota Vikings had a much better season than anyone expected. And, yes, they did win the North Division by defeating the Green Bay Packers. However, in their first game in the playoffs they played the Seattle Seahawks and just barely managed to squeak out a loss. The 27 yard field goal attempt that would have won the game if made, was missed and the Vikings disappointed their fans once again.

And, to make matters worse, the Packers won their first round game in the playoffs. Ugh.

Oh, well, with the new swanky stadium opening next season, the Vikings are sure to be disappointing fans for years to come.

David Bowie Died

The world was shocked to learn of David Bowie's death this past week. It really came as a surprise because no one, except those closest to him, had any idea the man was so sick. He'd just celebrated his 69th birthday and released a new album, so when I saw he was in the news Monday morning, I naturally thought it was about how well the new album was doing, not that Bowie had died.

I was stunned. I liked David Bowie. I wasn't a megafan, but I liked a lot of his music and I'd always admired him as an artist. He certainly had more to give to the world.

I wrote about three of my favorite David Bowie albums for Warehouse Find, the official blog of Nostalgia Zone.

It was with hesitation that I brought up some dissenting voices in the wake of Bowie's death. The very day the world learned of his death, two articles (there have been more since then) surfaced on the internet decrying him as a sex abuser. One article was very inflammatory, while the other was more measured in its calling out of sex abuse. The claims centered around a rape accusation in 1987, of which Bowie was cleared of charges, and of statutory rape when a former groupie, Lori Mattix, claimed she lost her virginity to Bowie when she was 15. Both articles assume Bowie to be guilty.

I understand that we should remember people as human beings who, no matter how wonderful their contributions to the world, can be flawed. I also understand that today's society looks at the whole rockstar/groupie dynamic differently, especially when it comes to sex with underage groupies. Society no longer shrugs its shoulders and says, "Oh, those rockstars."  And that's a good thing. It shows we've matured. However, for me, accusations and anecdotes are not enough to label David Bowie as a sex abuser. While for others, accusations and anecdotes mean guilty.

We have a legal standard that states, "Innocent until proven guilty." And that goes for celebrities, including David Bowie. Ms Mattix could be lying. I think she's probably not, but no one really knows for sure.

David Bowie was human and now he's dead. Let's celebrate the art he has left us.

I Didn't Win The Powerball

A lot of people didn't win the 1.6 BILLION dollar Powerball jackpot this past week, but there were three winning tickets. I usually don't buy lottery tickets. I realize my odds of winning are only slightly better when I buy a ticket than not buying one. But buying a ticket pretty much just buys you the chance to dream. So, this past week, I did buy myself a chance to dream.

I advised my listeners: If you are going to buy a lottery ticket, just buy one. More than one will not increase your odds significantly, so it's a waste of your money.

Squatty Potty

Then the show went right in the crapper. I talked about this Squatty Potty device that seems to have popped up just recently. It's a device that fits around the base of your toilet on which you place your feet in order to poop in a more squatted position.

You see, the natural way to poop is in a squatting position not a seated one. Right there we have the if it's natural it must be good fallacy.

From what I could find the device isn't complete quackery. It can help ease your bowel movements, but it doesn't prevent constipation. It may not be the worst product out there, but it may not be worth your money. It does, however, have a pretty awesome ad. Unicorns that poop soft serve ice cream? Whoever came up with that idea 10 points to you!

Hang on! Howard Stern likes it? Well, then that's good enough for m... No. No, it isn't.

Movie Recommendation: CBGB (2013)

Unclaimed Freight Productions
I recommended this movie as part of my tribute to Alan Rickman. He, too, died this past week. Also, very sad and surprising.

He stars as Hilly Kristal in this biopic of the owner and operator of the iconic  New York Punk Rock club: CBGB. It was a dive bar in the Bowery district of New York City that Hilly used to feature some of Punk Rock's greatest bands. Blondie, Television, Talking Heads, and the Ramones all got their starts there and they are all featured in this film.

It was an unusual role for Rickman. Kristal is such a laconic slob while Rickman is generally so clean and polished, but I think he pulls it off. Not everyone agrees with me as the movie wasn't reviewed especially well. Still I like the glimpse into that time period that gave birth to a genre of music I really like.

It also includes a brief scene of Kristol quietly singing a simple country song about a bird looking for love. The song was written by Hilly Kristal and Rickman actually sings it. Rickman's voice isn't half bad.

It's streaming on Netflix, not for free.
