I Saw Dana Gould

The fellow in the back and I are stunned into silence by Dana Gould's amazing ability to sign a poster.

Well, I did. He performed at the Acme Comedy Club. He was very funny.

I (once again) recommended listening to his podcast, The Dana Gould Hour. I gave a few reasons why I enjoy it so much. And I told him that his is the only podcast I listen to in which I never feel compelled to speed through his ad reads. He suggested a possible reason for that...

Oh, Boy. Would you Guys Stop Doing This?

There's some fakery going on here.
The internet keeps getting filled up with lies about this guy. And I keep having to tell the internet that there's plenty of actual bad stuff about him that can be used to try to convince others to not re-elect him, you don't have to make stuff up.

Does the president having improper feelings for his daughter? I don't know.

The maker of this meme wants us to think he does. Sure, it might just be a joke, but there are some people who will think the middle and lower right photos aren't fake. They are.

Even the images that haven't been doctored can look wrong when just the right moment is chosen and the "Trump wants to bang his daughter" text is added.

The images came from the 2016 Republican National Convention. Ivanka Trump gives a speech and introduces her father. Watch the last 30 seconds on this video and the moment looks completely innocent.

It's All About Timing

It may seem odd but drawing images can be subject to timing and pacing. These three images all have the same problem in that they flow awkwardly and that throws off the timing. The "punchline" comes at the wrong place.

In the comparison of Democrats and Republicans, which I drew because I couldn't find the original, the punchline comes in too early. In the two Wonder Woman images, the same joke is ruined by the punchline coming in visually before the set-up.

The Democrat should be on the right for this to flow properly.
Hannity should be on the right and Wonder Woman's image should be flipped.
Ditto.

Don't you agree? Of course you do.

And Still No Decent Photograph Of Bigfoot

I spotted the above image on the Monster Talk Facebook page. It shows a deer that appears to be fleeing from a flying squirrel. It's an eerie, yet cool image. And it must be a rare moment and still a photo was captured.

However, to this day there is still no decent photograph of bigfoot. Maybe some day.

Speaking Of Photographs Of Bigfoot

"Stop, Lady! Or I'll shoot!"

Could this illustration (above) by Mort Kuntsler for an article in a 1960 edition of True Magazine have been the inspiration for the bigfoot costume that was probably used in the Patterson/Gimllin film from 1967? (I heard about this article on the Squaring The Strange Podcast)

We can't say for certain, but the bigfoots in the two images do share an interesting feature in common: Pendulous breasts.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment And ARGH!: Recycling PSA On The Radio

I didn't have the audio for this Public Service Announcement for recycling when I recorded the show, but you can listen to it here. I hate these sorts of ads. A repeated phrase, multiple voices, kids' voices, and the ad doesn't even tell you what it's about until three quarters of the way through. I hate that!

And, kids, you ain't growing up. You are no longer useful in your present state, you will rounded up, destroyed, and made into something else. That's not growing up.

Three Cool Things

It's true.
1) Speaking of bigfoot pictures, someone on the internets put the above images of Amelia Earhart and Patterson/Gimlin's bigfoot together and made a truthful observation. It's brilliant and funny. And that's cool.

2) NASA's Insight lander has successfully landed on Mars. Thus continuing our robot invasion of our red neighbor. COOL!

3) November's daily drawing challenge of Crystalvember has come to an end. That might not be cool, but helping a Facebook friend have something to look forward to each day while dealing with a serious illness was very cool.

It's Not True: Blucher Does Not Mean Glue

At the end of last week's show I blurted out that in the classic comedy Young Frankenstein Cloris Leachman's character name means glue in German. I had heard that not-a-factoid recently on the Dana Gould Hour podcast. I didn't verify and friend of the show, Michael, clued me in on it being a myth. There is no German word meaning glue, either a noun or a verb, that is in any way close to Blucher.

US Code, Title 36, Subtitle 1, Part A, Chapter 3, Subsection 301

I am not easily offended, but I am easily annoyed. And I find it very annoying to see people at sporting events standing with their hands over their hearts during the singing of God Bless America. According to the US Code, American citizens are to do that during the playing of our National Anthem - The Star-Spangled Banner. God Bless America is not our National Anthem, people!

I expressed that annoyance on the Facebook and someone attempted to tell me I was wrong. As if! When have I ever been wrong? Oh. Right. The Frau Blucher thing.

In the course of that social media discussion, I was a bit sloppy and I was called on it. I eventually set things straight by not attempting to paraphrase and just quoted directly from the Code. That went better. I need to be more clear.

However, there is one argument that, if made, I would concede the whole thing. Did someone make me concede?

The Thin Edge Of The Wedge

Can someone explain to me what it is with some Republicans and their obsession with getting their god back into the public schools? It's really quite disturbing how some feel it's fine to exclude certain students in the name of tolerance (and promotion) of the majority's religion.

Well, they say, "God" can be any god, not just ours (wink, wink).

Oh, really? Does that include those religions that worship multiple gods?

This all stems from Minnesota State Sentator Dan Hall's legislation that would allow public schools to install privately funded displays of the National Motto (it really shouldn't be our motto) In God We Trust. It's so good to know that all the other problems have been solved, because our state senate can spend its time figuring out how to combine Church and Sate. At least, the legislation doesn't mandate the display. Oh, Minnesota is so progressive!

This legislation is the thin end of the wedge to get kids saying the Lord's Prayer in school so things can be great again the way it was in the Senator's day. He even says it's a "good start."

I'm an atheist. My wife is an atheist. Our son is an atheist and he's in the public school system. Why, Senator Hall, do you want to exclude us?

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Taking Your Guns And Tombstone Meme

I know, for a Pedantic Moment I really ought to have everything straight, but I didn't have the image of the meme available, so I didn't get the wording exactly right, but I had the gist of it correct. Good enough. (You try to do an hour long show!)

As you can see, the meme above is an anti-gun control message. The person who made it used a gun protestor's admission of wanting to take guns away from law-abiding Americans to give their response. Their response was shown by using an image of Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) from the film Tombstone. Sort of, "Oh, yeah? Well, just try and take 'em."

Except. In the movie, just prior to the big gunfight at the OK corral, what was it Doc and the Earp brothers came to take from Ike Clanton and his gang? Hmmmmm?

The Clairvoyant's Clients Are Being Conned By Someone Other Than The Clairvoyant?

It appears a con is on. A second one. Well, you see, there's a clairvoyant woman in Scotland who has spent the last 30 years connin... er... building a clientele and some other con artist is attempting get in on the con... er.. I mean... umm.

Actually, the irony of this story is awfully fun.

In my opinion, her clients aren't only being conned by the outside party. She's also conning them and, because I'm sure she believes in her abilities, she's conning herself.

Three Cool Things

3) The monthly meet-up with the MN Skeptics is also cool, and this time a member who hasn't been to one in quite a while finally made it back. And that was really cool.

2) My wife clued me onto this comedy troupe called WomenComedy. It's all dudes, so I'm not sure how they came up with that name, but their videos are very funny and that's cool.

1) Facebook helped me solve a case of identifying a famous person at a ballgame. I took a few screen captures, so the quality wasn't the best. Despite the bigfoot level photo quality, the person was identified. Cool!

dimland radio 10-15-16 show notes

Happy Anniversary!

My wife and I just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary on October 13th. We dropped the kid at my parents' house and we took in a comedy show. The headliner was Dana Gould and we had a great time. We were right in the front row, so there were a couple of somewhat awkward, yet hilarious, moments.

Gould is very funny and he is the host of my current favorite podcast: The Dana Gould Hour. It's a monthly (more or less) podcast that is never just an hour. Very funny and thought-provoking stuff. It's on iTunes. Check it out.

We Can Say What Now On TV?

Just when you thought the Republican candidate couldn't get any lower, he does. Audio and video came out of him talking about his celebrity giving him ability to just do whatever he wants to women. Sure, it's bragging bullshit, but it's crude and base and, if he actually does what he claims, illegal.

So, in response to this revelation, First Lady Michelle Obama gave a very excellent and heartfelt speech on Trump's use of language, his attitude toward women, and how his is a mindset this nation, and world, should not tolerate.

Hear! Hear!

But, as I heard a local talk radio host ask, how do the Obama's square that correct stance and attitude with having rap recording artists, such as Ludacris, as guests at the White House? I hope I don't appear that I'm not painting rap music with a broad brush, I know it has a wide range of styles and topics, but would Ludacris maybe have a song or two with lyrics that contain what could be euphemistically called "locker room talk"?

Curious.

Also curious is the breaking down of the barrier of not referring to a woman's genitalia as a "pussy" on television. Although most news outlets were careful not to say it, some did. And Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show pulled a lot of comedy gold out of it.

What would George Carlin think?

The MN Vikings Are Undefeated, So Far

I have been a Vikings fan for many years, more than 40 in fact. And, as encouraging as this 5 - 0 start is, I know one thing that fans can always count on when it comes to the Vikings: They never fail to disappoint.

So, with that in mind, in my latest blog on Warehouse Find, the official blog of Nostalgia Zone, focus on just how this team builds up their fans' hope and dashes them. Four lost Superbowls and five lost NFC Championships doesn't seem to deter some people.

Well, I'm not hopping on that bandwagon until a week after they win the Superbowl.

Movie Recommendation: From Hell (2001)

I have recommended this one before, but I think it's a worthy, stylish, if bleak, film. Perfect for October!
