It's Not True: Detroit Woman Did Not Have 14th Child By 14th Different Man

This is going to come a shock to some of you, but there are sites on the internet that make stuff up. World News Daily Report is one of them. If people knew that, they wouldn't have credulously shared the story of a Detroit woman giving birth to her 14th child by a 14th father. The article makes up the idea that she now holds the world's record for having the most children each by a different father.

The picture of the happy parents is actually the proud parents of the first child born in a Connecticut town in 2015. Snopes.com sniffed this one out.

Snopes has done the internet further great service by providing a list of websites whose "news" articles everyone should be wary of. So has Doubtful News.

I Bought A Suit

I have reached the ripe old age of 51 without having ever owned a suit. Well, there was that one a friend give me, but it didn't fit, so I never wore it. That makes the suit I bought a couple weeks ago my first official suit.

I was asked what was the occasion. No, occasion. I just thought it was time. We had money from the tax refund, so I bought one. A little more expensive than I had hoped, but what are ya gonna do?

I went over to my folks' house to show it off. I told Mom and Dad, since I figured they wouldn't see it at their funerals, I had better show them now.

Such a good son.

 

And, no, it's not one of those fashion forward suits. This one fits.

Let's Talk About Teeth

 

There's a TV ad for a clinic that does dental implants. I have nothing against the idea of dental implants. I know they are spendy, but for some they are a better solution than dentures.

What I noticed about this ad, and I'm sorry I couldn't find a clip of it to link to, was 1) the late 50s/early 60s aged woman looked as though teeth weren't her only implants (ahem). 2) She had just a hint of a lisp. And 3) the teeth were unnaturally white.

I know it's just me, but there is something wrong with teeth being that white.

I also told a couple of tales about my mother and her dentures. Both might be embarrassing for her, especially the story about my friend mishearing what Mom said about when her teeth went bad, so don't tell her I told you. Let's keep it just between us.

Raven Symone Might Be Unclear On Something

Raven Symone, one of the hosts of The View, is holding up a long standing tradition of celebrities threatening to leave the country if the wrong person becomes President. However, she didn't quite get it right. She's threatened to move to Canada if a Republican gets nominated.

Uhh, Raven? There will be a Republican nominated. That's what happens in the Presidential election process. I guess Canada better make some room.

However, I'm going to assume Raven meant she'd leave if a Republican gets elected.

Couldn't one of the other hosts have corrected her on this? Sure they could, but none did.

 

Movie Recommendation: Bone Tomahawk (2015)

 

Caliber Media Company

This Western slash Horror film slipped by barely noticed last year. It should have been noticed, I think. It's pretty good. It stars Kurt Russell as the aged, but still sharp sheriff of the small town of Bright Hope from which three people had been abducted by a very secretive, primal, brutal clan of Native Americans. This clan had been content to keep to themselves when two bandits stumbled through their sacred burial land.

One of the bandits (David Arquette) escaped to Bright Hope and ends up in a jail cell with one of the sheriff's bullets in his leg. He and two others are abducted. The sheriff heads after accompanied by his back-up deputy (Richard Jenkins), the husband (Patrick Wilson) of a woman who had been taken, and the town's wealthiest and best educated man (Matthew Fox).

Be warned there are moments of brutal violence. Some is off camera, but the sounds almost make it worse than what we do see. It's still worth a watch.

Why Do I Keep Listening To The Film Vault

The Film Vault is a weekly podcast on which the two hosts make a Top 5 list of a different category related to movies. Generally, I like the two hosts: Bald Bryon and Anderson. However, they can drive me nuts!

I discussed a few of those reasons and specifically complained about their most recent show. That show featured their Top 5 picks of songs performed in movies. These songs could not be covers and the films couldn't be documentaries or concert films. The song had to be by a fictional artist as part of the film.

My complaint was that they played clips of the songs and talked of virtually every second of every clip! ARRGH!!

More About The Confederate Flag

I noted that there were plenty of people pushing to take those flags down from State buildings, but there's been a bandwagon jumping by Walmart, eBay, and other sellers by stopping the sale of any item festooned with the offensive flag.

I'm not so sure that's the best thing to do. I still maintain that private citizen should be able to own and display it if they like, but our government should rethink it.

And there was this cartoon that makes an excellent point, which I mentioned on the show, but now I can't find it. Sorry.

It's Not True: Not A Rat In The KFC Meal

Doubtful News carried the follow-up to this sensational, though hard to swallow story. The rat turned out to be (drum roll) chicken.

Pedantic Moment: Buick Ads

I really get bugged when I watch the current Buick ads in which people can't tell which car is a Buick. The new Buicks aren't your dad's Buicks anymore, apparently. They ain't dumpy anymore, so people are having a hard time identifying a Buick.

A valet parking attendant can't find the Buick in the lot. A woman standing on the sidewalk, inches away from her friend sitting in a Buick can't find her find. Her friend just says, "I'm in the Buick."

This does not reflect reality. 

Pringles Moment

 

Picture that scene in 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' in which Violet ignores Mr. Wonka's warning to not chew the entire meal flavored gum which hadn't been perfected yet. Instead of an entire meal, imagine just a cheese burger. And instead of gum, imagine  Pringles chip.

 

Are you imagining it? Well, that's pretty much the experience I had when I ate a cheese burger flavored Pringles chip. Except I didn't balloon up and there were no Oompa Loompas. 

Pedantic Moment: Picking Apart 'Westworld"

 

I then spoiled the hell out of the 1973 classic sci-fi Western 'Westworld'. I like the movie, but there are a few things that make it pick apart worthy. If you haven't seen it yet, you may want to watch it first before listening to my rantings.

 

Movie Recommendations: Frank (2014)

 

A quirky, enjoyable film about an aspiring musician getting involved with an unusual, arty, underground band led by Frank. Frank (Michael Fassbender) is the artistic genius behind the band and he's just a bit off, but so likeable. Oh, and he wears a papier-mache head. All the time.

 

It's pretty unusual and it has some pretty unusual music. You'll like it as long as Anderson and Bryon are talking through the main song in the final performance in the film.

Better Late Than Never

This was the show that was supposed to play last week. I'm not entirely certain why it didn't play as scheduled, but I think I might have screwed something up. But, I guess better late than never, because I think this was one of my better shows.

Doubtful News Dropped My Name!

 

So, in late May a video of an odd looking object floating through the skies of New Zealand was captured on video through the window of a jet airliner. What was this UFO (remember the U stands for unidentified)? Some have suggested it was the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

 

Someone had posted an image of His Holy Noodleness on the Facebook group page Group of Fort. The person was curious as to what it was and what the other members of the group thought of it.

As it so happened, just a day or two prior to that posting a FB friend of mine had posted a link to the YouTube video of the hoaxer showing how he created the image. With that bit of good info available, I linked to it in the comment thread.

Sharon Hill, the curator of the Doubtful News website, posted on Doubtful News the hoax reveal and yours truly got himself a nice thank you.

Pretty cool beans!

Bitch About The First Pitch

I wondered why there was a change in how baseball conducted the ceremonial first pitch. In the old days, the first pitch was thrown from the stands, not the mound. Maybe that was just for presidents. Anyway, I did some research and it looks like Ronald Reagan was the first sitting president to take to the mound for that first pitch.

 

Thanks, Obama!

Speaking Of Politics

 

I took a moment to suggest that politics can get otherwise fine skeptics to fall victim to their own political bias. One such skeptic who is very left in his politics tried to shrug off a recent poll that shows that George W Bush now has a better approval rating than President Obama. He suggested the sample size was small and skewed by being done mostly by landline phone calls.

 

I suggested that had the poll showed Obama ahead of W, that particular skeptic probably wouldn't have had an issue with sample size or landlines. He would likely just accept it as a given. "Of course, Obama is more popular than Bush. Duh!"

 

Thanks, Obama! 

 

A Selfie Brings The Hurt To ISIS

 

Looks Photoshopped, he isn't looking at the camera, and image is not the selfie in question.

 

Now I wasn't saying that a selfie taken by a member of ISIS didn't help the US military in selecting a target. I was suggesting that the image in the article on the ISIS selfie probably was constructed for the article.

 

I thought the image looked Photoshopped, that the terrorist wasn't looking at the camera, and my biggest problem was that the selfie image was a third person (or should that be second person?) point of view and not the selfie itself.

Sleep Paralysis And Fringe Thinking

 

I'm not a psychologist. I may be completely wrong, but that didn't stop me from talking about how folks who tend to believe fringe or conspiratorial ideas will accept opposing ideas as long as those ideas also conflict with the "official" story. I also pointed out that even though the majority of experts in some field can be in complete opposition to the idea of one crank, fringe thinkers and conspiracists will hold the crank's idea up as the real story.

 

And I talked about a recent guest on the internet show Paradigm Shift and his alien abduction experience. I never heard of him or his claims, but in the break before he told his story I had pretty much nailed every aspect of his claim.

However, I did this with just myself as a witness. So, you'll just have to take my word for it and I understand if you remain skeptical.

 

But the reason I could be so accurate was because the fellow was describing all the classic symptoms of sleep paralysis. I also told about the experience I had with my own bout of sleep paralysis.

Open Mind?

 

Once again the skeptic (me) has to explain the whole open mind concept.  Having an open mind mean being willing to consider a claim, not necessarily to accept that claim.  I read Sharon Hill's (Doubtful News) blog about who is open minded, the skeptic or the believer.  If you've listened to my show for any amount of time, you'd know what I think.

 

Never Found In The 80s: Husker Du

 

This band is from St. Paul, MN, but I'm sure you've heard they are from Minneapolis.  That happens all the time.  People not from Minnesota think our only city is Minneapolis.  I makes me so... Sorry, I'm from St. Paul.  We get a little touchy about the whole Minneapolis thing.  Anyway, I wrote about Husker Du and included a concert video clip.  I was at that concert!  You can see my piece on this never found band at the Stuck in the 80s blog.

Why I Hate The NY Yankees (And You Should, Too)

Sure, there are plenty of reasons to hate the Yankees, but while watching Ken Burns: Baseball I finally pinpointed my main reasons: the 1960 World Series and Stephen Jay Gould.  If you weren't listening you can download the show from the Z Talk Radio archive and get the details.

Well, as long as I was talking about it already I figured I should recommend this excellent documentary series.  It and its follow-up The Tenth Inning are streaming on Netflix.  I watched this series a few times now.  It demonstrates why baseball is the greatest game ever devised.  Ever.  Period.
