dimland radio 4-21-18 show notes

WRONG!

I misspoke during the show last week when I was talking about the band Tool. Twice I called their song Forty Six & 2, Forty Six & 10. Whoops. Friend of the show, Craig, a big Tool fan himself, caught the error. I did get the song title correct in last week's show notes. Just sayin'.

And there's a certain irony to my getting it wrong twice...

Talk About The Weather

Like last week's show, this show is an exclusive download-only edition. And it's for the same reason: A big floor scrubbing job that will go late into the night on Saturday.

We were supposed to do this job last week and, though we tried, a massive snowstorm that hit Central Minnesota made that impossible. So, we cancelled the job and it's been rescheduled for this Saturday.

So, another download-only exclusive.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

EVERY TIME!

It's been two years since the musician Prince died. And over those two year EVERY time the local Fox News affiliate does a story about him viewers get to see that same video footage of him playing on Saturday Night Live. It's from his last appearance on that Saturday night television staple.

It's probably a licensing thing and not just laziness. However, a couple times recently they've also used footage from a couple of his music video, so I'm beginning to think it is out of laziness.

Art Bell Died

I can't say that I ever listened to much of his show Coast To Coast. It always seemed to be in commercial break whenever I tuned in. I did hear some and I can't say I thought his show was very scientifically sound. In fact, Mr. Bell did a lot of damage to the cause of scientific literacy by promote every quack pseudoscientific idea that came to his attention.

Alex Jones Is An Actor And An Asshole

The king of false flag-waving conspiracy theorists, Alex "Asshole" Jones, is possibly the biggest piece of shit with a microphone today. Well, the shithead is getting sued by the families of two of the Sandy Hook shooting victims. They are suing him for his five-year campaign of claiming the shooting never happened, nobody was killed, and the families are crisis actors. It's all part of a deep conspiracy by the gubment to take our guns, I guess.

Actually, it's more likely all part of asshole Jones' attempt to bilk as much money as he can for his gullible followers. His shows are pretty geared to just getting his viewers to buy his over-priced snake oil.

The families are only suing for one million dollars, but he should be slapped for so much more. Do not forget he testified in court that his on-air personality is an act. And don't forget that he just did an about face on Sandy Hook and now says he believes it happened. Lawsuits can change minds, I guess.

So, who's the actor now, Mr. Jones?

The Internets Can Be Awesome

In the way science corrects itself when science gets something wrong, the internets can do the same thing. Recently, a story appeared online of a large, wolf-like creature killing dogs and terrorizing people in Argentina. A picture, all grainy from being taken in low light, of this creature has been included with the story.

Ooooooo, creepy!
Look familiar?
It's a creepy image. It's pretty blurry and grainy due to the low light. It's a strange-looking creature. It's also a fake.

Eagle eyes on the interwebs spotted that the creature was lifted from artwork produced for the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It an artist's concept illustration of the character Prof. Lupin in his werewolf form. A Facebook friend of mine used the Photoshop and nailed it!

Kudos to my FB friend!
So, the internet continues to be a double-edged sword. It floats bullshit images like this one that fool people into believing a claim, but the internet also has people who expose these frauds. Sadly, more people will see and believe the fake than will get the truth.

Internet skeptics' work never ends.

The FDA Disclaimer

When some miracle supplement is being advertised on TV look for the disclaimer posted above. If you see it, you can safely assume the product is some bullshit snake oil and save your money. I made the point that, though actual prescription drugs advertised on TV will have a long list of side effects, the ad don't have that FDA disclaimer.

Three Cool Things

3) As much of a pain in the ass as that snowstorm was, it did make things look awfully pretty.

Ahhh, April in the Upper Midwest!
2) The MN Timberwolves (basketball) and the MN Wild (hockey) have both made the playoffs in their respective sports. It's been 14 years since the Timberwolves had made it. Both teams will likely be knocked out in the first round, but it's still cool.

1) Vulture.com has a lengthy article on the 100 most influential comic book pages of all time. There's some very good pages in there and overall the article is a good history of the progress of comics from their humble beginnings to today.

Not Talk About Meh Beer On This Show

I started the show by promising I would not mention the whole beer thing again. No mention of Rolling Rock or pilsners or Summit Extra Pale Ale or my boss getting me meh beer. That was my promise to my listeners and, to my readers, I make the same promise:

There will be no mention of the things I mentioned in the preceding paragraph anywhere in this entire post. No one mention.

This space has been intentionally left blank.

A Sliver Of Slack

Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary, suffered "foot in mouth" disease when he mentioned Hitler and chemical weapons when saying what a bad guy the President of Syria is and that Russia shouldn't align themselves with him. But he made the mistake of bringing up Hitler and he was wrong. Hitler and the Nazis were using chemical weapons in the genocide attempted during the Holocaust.

My slack was given because Spicer was right to shame Russia for backing such an evil guy. But, as I said, just a sliver.

Why Didn't Hitler Use Chemical Weapons In Battle?

Well, there is some indication there was, at least, one use of chemical weapons against Soviet troops and civilians in 1942. But why didn't the Germans use chemical weapons during the Allied Invasion on D-Day?

According to Hermann Goering, it was because of horses. The Germans used horses extensively to transport equipment. This was due to the low supplies of gasoline. The Germans couldn't come up with a gas mask that the horses would tolerate, so they didn't use chemical weapons on D-Day.

This means that had the Nazis figured out how to make a gas mask that horses didn't mind wearing, the invasion would have gone much differently, possibly even fail.

There are other speculations about the Nazi's reluctance to use chemical weapons in this interesting article on FactCheck.org.

SNL, Louis CK, Tig Notaro, And A Party Clown

A recent episode of Saturday Night Live had host Louis CK in a skit in which he hires a children's party clown to come to his house and entertain him. Just him. That's the first joke of the skit and I just ruined it for you. Sorry.

But, fellow comedian Tig Notaro had already made a short film using the same premise. And in her earlier version, she too ruins the first joke by saying upfront to the clown gig booker that the clown is just for her.

Notaro's version is much longer than SNL's by about 10 minutes. Still the similarities are undeniable. The material does appear to have been ripped off by SNL. However, I think SNL's is the funnier of the to sketches

This site has links to both sketches. You decide which is funnier.

A Modern Pterosaur Expert?

Pterosaurs were flying reptiles from the age of dinosaurs and have been extinct for tens of millions of years. But there is a modern pterosaur expert who has taken to the internet to expose the truth that the beasts yet live! Well, they did during the American Civil War anyway.

Now, I'm not certain if this fellow is a Poe and is putting us all on. He seems to be on the level, though. His website has an "Official Announcement of a Joint Declaration." He, a modern pterosaur expert and a missile defense physicist agreed, by phone, that an old photograph of Union soldiers posing with a dead pterosaur is authentic.

The "expert" says another photograph alleging the same think is a hoax, but the one he touts is the real thing.

Well, I went over a few problems I had with his real thing.

Movie Recommendation: Fail Safe (1964)

With the recent bombings carried out by the Trump Administration and everyone on edge about the impending nuclear war, I thought a nice movie about a miscommunication between American Strategic Defense and a US Air Force bomber squadron, leading to the President and the US Defense Department's desperate attempt to avert an unintended nuclear attack against Moscow would put my listeners' minds at ease. I'm such a stinker.

Directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda as the President, Fail Safe has many similarities to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. However, Fail Safe isn't a satire. It's deadly serious. And very thought-provoking.

Pedantic Moment

Remember that girl you never noticed in high school?  That's the question asked in some car commercial, I think.  No matter.  The answer would have to be no.  How does one remember someone they never noticed?

Penn and Sean

I talked some about Penn Jillette's podcast and a point he was going to make, but he became distracted and never got to his point.  That's something I find so annoying.

I also find Sean Hannity quite annoying.  And it's not always due to his politics.

Well, duh!

Guess who will have a better chase getting a stranger to consent for some impromptu sex:  a young attractive woman or young attractive man?  Anyone want to bet on the dude getting some quick, non-committal sex?

Well, the folks at Whatever, an online video prank group, decided to give it try.  You can learn more here

Before And After Only An Hour

A personal trainer named Andrew Dixon decided to demonstrate the deceptiveness of those weight loss/muscle gain before and after pictures.  With a little grooming, a few push-ups, some flexing and a change of lighting, Mr. Dixon showed it doesn't take much to fool people.

Check it out here.

Celebs Don't Die In Threes

It might seem as though celebs die in threes, but really it's more how people notice things.  Celebs die everyday, you just don't hear about most of them because they may not be famous enough.  NBC News online explained the misperception here.

Live From New York!

I have been watching the original Saturday Night Live program on Netflix.  It's been and intriguing experience.  The original cast is funny, but not as funny as we tend to remember them.  What I find most interesting is the time capsule aspect of it. Netflix has nearly every episode available for download.

10 Years Old With Thoughts As Bold As Thoughts Can Be

My son Hayden has just turned 10 years old.  Where does the time go?

Movie Recommendation: Looper (2012)

TriStar Pictures

This is a terrific bit of sci-fi!  It's directed by Rian Johnson (I think I said it was Rain) and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt.  It's a very good that will bend your mind.  One of the best time travel that I've seen.  This film is very clever and has a very satisfying ending.
