It Blowed Up Real Good!

Friday morning, as I was brushing my teeth, the house was shook (sort of) by what sounded like something hitting it. Something big. I investigated and found nothing unusual.

Later that day, my wife called me with the news about what it was we heard. Three and a half miles away a house had exploded.

The explosion was caught on video. When you watch it, you will be just as amazed as I was to learn that no one was killed. In fact, there was an 80 year-old man in the house when the accident happened. He's been hospitalized and is in critical condition.

Oh, And There's Still Some Sports To Talk About

Yes, baseball may be over and we're still months away from its return, but there's the lesser game taking its place (for now). It's football and it's an entertaining diversion, I suppose.

And last Monday night was quite diverting. I didn't watch the game as it was played, but I sure wish I had. It was crazy!

It may have been a preview of this season's Superbowl. It was the LA Rams hosting the Kansas City Chiefs and it was a doozy! The final score was 54-51 with the Rams prevailing.

Watch this highlights reel and I'm sure you'll agree it was a crazy game.

Wording Is Important

A friend told me he was confused by the written article on a local TV station's website. They included a video report, but my friend didn't watch the video, he just read the article.

The story was about a group of young African-American men being told by the manager of a St. Paul Chipotle restaurant that they needed to pay before their food would be prepared. The incident was caught on video, which then went viral and the manager was fired.

She was rehired when it was learned that one of those customers had done a fair amount of bragging online about dining and dashing. The manager had recognized the young men as having grabbed food and run without paying for it before, so she told to pay first.

The confusion my friend had was due to the written article stating "the manager tells the African-American men they need to pay for their food before getting it." My friend asked, "Doesn't everybody have to pay before they pick up their food at pretty much every fast food restaurant?"

Yes. Actually at every fast food restaurant.

In the video report, the reporter stated that the men needed "to pay for their food before it was made."

Wording is important.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Ford Truck Commercial

The longer version of this Ford Truck commercial featuring the Jerry Reed hit East Bound And Down has a curious disclaimer. The ad shows several trucks driving in the same direction along a desert highway. There's are no stunts being performed, no Rockfords, no driving on two wheels, there aren't even any lane changes.

And, yet, in the lower right corner (see photo above) at the beginning of the ad is the disclaimer: "Professional drivers on a closed course. Do not attempt."

Huh? Do not attempt to drive the trucks? Is that what Ford is saying?

Two Movie Recommendations: The Machinist (2004) & Good Time (2017)

I haven't done a movie recommendation in a while, so on this show I gave two.

We just watched these films this past week.

The first is The Machinist (2004). It stars Christian Bale as Trevor, who has a few problems. We are uncertain as the cause of his troubles, which manifest as insomnia, he hasn't slept in a year, and a disturbing amount of weight-loss taking place over the same amount of time.

There's a new employee at the machine shop, who seems a little sinister. Trevor is unsure what to think of the man. There is a tragic accident at the shop and Trevor wonders if the new employee was responsible.

There's a real Hitchcockian feel to this psychological thriller. Is there a conspiracy against Trevor or is he losing his mind?

Be warned. Bale really did lose an extreme amount of weight and his look is quite jarring.

The second recommendation is Good Time (2017). It stars Robert Pattinson, who also lost weight for the role, just not nearly as much as Bale. Pattinson plays a small time crook who, along with his mentally challenged brother (played by Benny Safdie, who co-directs the film with his brother Josh), rob a bank and get away with a sizable amount of money.

However, things go wrong from there and we follow Connie through the night as he makes one bad decision after another.

Both movies are worth a watch. They are on DVD through Netflix.

Three Cool Things

1) Last week I talked briefly about Marvel Comics' Stan Lee dying. I mentioned that there was a gathering of the G.O.O.C.H. Squad on Douglas Arthur's Assault of the 2-Headed Space Mules podcast to discuss The Man's legacy. The podcast has been posted and it's awfully cool.

2) Try as he might, my son Hayden just doesn't have much luck getting me to like the music he likes. I'm just a grump. But the other day he played Gerard Way's Baby, You're A Haunted House. (See video above.) I like it! It's catchy. Hayden was pleased. Maybe Dad can be cool.

3) And, of course, it was Thanksgiving, and that's always cool.

I hope you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

The Streisand Effect

I started the show talking about the Streisand Effect and what the phrase means. I was laying the groundwork for suggesting that the NFL's kneeling during the National Anthem policy might get more kneeling and not less.

NFL Doesn't Know What It's Doing

Players can stay in the locker room during the playing of the National Anthem, but if they are on the field they better stand to attention. If they should kneel there will be penalties and fines. That's the new policy of the NFL meant to deal with players kneeling in protest during the Anthem. Maybe this will stop the kneeling, but I think it might actually anger the players and they'll kneel out of spite of the rule.

The League should have just said, "Hey, it's a free country. They can kneel if they want." Things might have petered out, but with all this policy-making it's just extended the life of the gesture.

But I could be wrong.

Sometimes I Choose To Live In A Different Reality

Kim Davis, the anti-gay marriage lady has written a book. MSN.com ran an article  abut her new book. The headline for the article suggested a reality I'd rather live in, so I didn't read the article in order to keep from ruining that reality.

I'll link to the article, but take my advice: Don't read past the headline. Life will be more funner that way.

A Dimland ARRGH!: "Perfect"

The word "perfect" seems to have become today's "awesome". And, although the trend is more assuming to me than an ARRGH!, this ad definitely annoys me.

A 19th Century Battle Between A Scientist And A Flat-Earther

I thought I'd tell the tale of 19th scientist Alfred Russel Wallace accepting a challenge to demonstrate that the earth is round. The flat-earther, John Hampden, offered 500 pounds to whoever could prove it. Wallace took him up on the challenge.

On March 5, 1870, Wallace proved the earth is a sphere. Hampden lost the bet and Wallace got the money. And a huge headache that lasted about 20 years.

I got my info for an article in Skeptic Magazine. You can click here to find the article. It's part of a special section of the magazine that focused on Wallace, the co-discoverer of Natural Selection.

And Then There Were Eight

Six more families of Sandy Hook shooting victims have filed lawsuits against shit-stain Alex Jones, the blowhard conspiracy monger who has earn millions of dollars off spreading misinformation about Sandy Hook and other similar events. He claimed the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax and there were no victims and the families and friends are actors.

So, with these six families that makes eight suing Jones, plus an FBI agent has also filed a suit against the false-flag claiming asshole.

Hey. He had it coming.

Three Cool Things

3) There are plenty of strange and scary sounds in the wild. Those sounds come from sources that aren't so strange. Here are two lynx making some very strange noises. When you hear a strange sound in the woods, it might be a lynx or fox or elk. Think those animals before you think bigfoot.

2) I stumbled upon an 1979 episode of the British TV documentary series South Bank featuring Talking Heads. Very cool!

1) Baseball on Facebook!!!

Two Corrections

During last week's show, I made a couple mistakes.  Hard to believe, I know, but I did.  When I was talking about Amanda Berry and her escape from 10 plus years of captivity, I got the name of her captor wrong.  He name was (he's dead now) Ariel Castro not Ariel Gonzalez.

And when I talked about the JFK assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald, I mistakenly referred to the computer animator who recreated the event through 3D computer animation as Gary Myer.  His name is Dale Myer.

My deepest apologies for these errors.

A Rant

I went on a rant that covered the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the NFL, and Selena Gomez.  It was tiring, but fun.

Ghost Hunters Burn Down Historic Building

In another What's The Harm moment (fully acknowledging Tim Farley's WhatsTheHarm.net), I talked about a group of nimrods who trespassed into the LeBeau Plantation house in Louisiana to hunt for ghosts.  Part of their equipment list included beer and pot.  The morons allegedly attempted to provoke the ghosties into showing themselves and, in the process, they, allegedly, burnt the building to the ground.  The seven hunters have been arrested.

Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Get Treated By Chiropractors

Continuing in the "what's the harm" mode, I discussed the Australian chiropractor who allegedly broke a baby's neck and an American chiropractor, who was ordered by a jury to compensate a patient $575,000, having been found responsible for causing that patient to have a stroke.  Although rare, the neck manipulation done by chiropractors can tear arteries in the neck which can lead to stroke.

Go here to learn more by the Australian chiropractor and here for the American one.  And go here to learn more about stroke caused by neck manipulation.

The Non-Tip That Wasn't A Non-Tip

I first spotted this story on Facebook.  It's the story of a gay waitress who claims a couple stiffed her out of a tip and left a homophobic message.  People were disgusted and rightly so.  BUT!  The couple in question came forward with evidence that they had indeed left a tip.  It seems the waitress may have been lying.

Read the sordid details here.

I also mentioned a similar story that surfaced some months ago about a Red Lobster waitress who received a racist message in lieu of a tip.  That story has also been disputed.  I must admit that with this story, when I first spotted it also on Facebook, I had my doubts.  Mainly, because I have a difficult time understanding why someone would be compelled to leave such a comment.  But some people just don't think the way I do.  Shame.

Movie Recommendation: Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)
Paramount Pictures

A classic Western directed by Sergio Leone and starring Henry Fonda (two weeks in a row recommending a Henry Fonda film?), Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, and Claudia Cardinale.  An epic Western in which Fonda plays the villain.  And, boy, is he one nasty villain.
