Peptiva Ad And Poor Advice

There is an ad for the dietary supplement running on the TV, in which a woman is texting her friend about always suffering bad stomach problems when she eats. Her friend gives advice, but make good advice.

My talk included me touching on probiotics, complimentary and alternative medicine, integrative medicine, Dr. David Katz (who developed Peptiva), and actual medicine. I maintain there is no such thing as alternative medicine. If it works, it's medicine.

Cool Thing #1: Late Night With David Letterman

I wrote about Late Night with David Letterman on Warehouse Find, the official blog of Nostalgia Zone, this week (Click here.) Well, there are lots of videos for he watching on the YouTube. And this link will take to the very first episode of Late Night. And that's a cool thing.

Cool Thing #2: Gang Of Four's "Appearance "On Late Night

As I watched that first episode of Late Night, I spotted something pretty cool. You can see it it the image above. It's a screen capture from that first show. It shows a wall in New York city with several bills posted on it. There are a few for Late Night, one for Miles Davis, and a few for post punk legends Gang Of Four (there are two full posters in the lower right).

 

So, it can be said Gang Of Four appeared on Letterman's ground-breaking show. True, they have appeared of Dave's CBS talk show the Late Show, but that show wasn't the same thing. Late Night was cool and so was this "appearance".

 

A Lame Attempt To Blackmail Me

 

I received a scam email from someone attempting to get me to send them $500 in bitcoin to them or else they would release video of me "enjoying" some online porn. I was given 50 hours to comply, otherwise everyone on my email list would be sent that video.

 

I didn't comply. It's far more than 50 hours. Have you seen such a video yet?

 

Pedantic Moment: Geico Ads

 

Geico Insurance has lots of ads. Their advertising budget must be huge to support so many different ad campaigns. One campaign caters to baseball rivalries and two of the ads bring out the pendant in me...

 

The ad featuring rival fans of the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets has a landscaper (the Mets fans) sculpting "Go Mets" into the lawn of a Nats fan. I think the landscaper will soon be looking for a new job.

 

Another ad has an Atlanta Braves fan choosing to sit between to crying babies rather than sit next to a Philadelphia Phillies fan. The things is the babies are obviously twins and the man and woman holding the fussy ones are obviously together, so why the empty seat between them?

Cool Thing #3: STEVE

 

"Steve is looking good tonight."

There is an unusual atmospheric condition related to the auroras. Amateur scientists/astronomers have helped the pros figure out what this phenomenon might be. Occasionally, a single thin purple ribbon of light can be seen in the night sky. The amateurs took to called it Steve. Professional astronomers used the inform the amateurs gathered to help figure out what was going on.

 

It's not completely settled but they are close. The pros decided to call the phenomenon Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement or STEVE. Cool!

One More Wisdom Tooth Gone

I talked about the second wisdom tooth removal in four years and likely the last.  At nearly 50 years of age, I am finally down to two wisdom teeth left.  I didn't have them removed when I was in my teens, when most people have theirs removed, because they were way deep in the jaw, so my dentist figured I'd be ok waiting.  And I was until about four years ago.

Both of the removed wisdoms have been in my lower jaw.  The two in my upper jaw are looking like they are going to stay put.  As the oral surgeon said of them, "They are asleep."

The Worst Aspect Of The Wisdom Removal

I recounted the most disturbing part of the whole wisdom tooth removal experience was the realization that the Health Partners clinic at which my procedure was carried out also offers chiropractic and acupuncture treatments! Yep, right down that hallway you will head away from the science-based medicine to the crap-based medicine (my thanks to the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe for those phrases).

I ought to write a letter.

Some Winter We're Having, Eh?

This has been quite a pain in the ass winter so far. The snow hasn't been a big problem, even though we do have quite a bit piling up. It's really been the extreme cold we've been experiencing that has put this winter high on the misery scale. As I write this, we await the probable announcement that school will be cancelled again for Monday. This will be the fourth day this school year that classes were called on account of cold.

Hayden and his classmates might be happy to stay home, but it looks very possible that one or two make-up days will be added at the end of the school year.

Absent-Mindedness

With all these cold snaps passing through, I've been starting and running the company van at work to be sure it runs. The van sits out in the elements and doesn't have a tank heater to help it survive the cold.  The other day, I started it up and let it run for a bit. Well, a little more than a bit. I left the van running for FOUR HOURS!

 

Whoop, whoop.

Movie Recommendation: WW and the Dixie Dancekings (1975)

20th Century Fox

 

During last week's music show I played a song from this movie.  I lamented that I had not seen this film, a favorite from my childhood, for many years and that it's not available on Netflix.  Well, never fear! You can watch the entire film on YouTube.

It stars Burt Reynolds as a charming, gas station robbing, big talking con man who hooks up with a struggling country music band called the Dixie Dancekings. Somehow, he takes them under his wing in order to get them to stardom and the Grand Ole Opry stage. Art Carney plays very pious, bible quoting (I guess that makes him a con man, too), lawman on WW's trail.

Not the greatest film ever made, it still has its charms. And that's country music's gentle giant Don Williams as the Dancekings' bass player.

A Follow-Up On Last Week's Show

The service for my mother-in-law was held on Saturday September 21st.  Quite a few people came to give their last respects and by the end of the service there wasn't a dry eye in the house.  The service was a little more religious than I had expected, but Mom was a believer and the memorial was for her, not me.

 

My oldest brother-in-law said a few words, the deacon who conducted the service read the tribute my wife wrote and he read the poem my son wrote.  Everyone was impressed with his poem.  Here's what he wrote... 

 

Do you want another blanket, Grandma?
You've been so kind, Grandma.
It's time for me to be kind to you.
You're so cold, Grandma.
Would you like another blanket?
Are you alright, Grandma?
Please say yes, please?
I wish you could hug me, one more time.
I wish you could laugh, one more time.
I wish you could walk in with a platter of food - the last one.
Goodbye Grandma, please say goodbye.

Alternative Medicine V Medicine

I talked a bit about alternative medicine and prayer and such.  Medicine, which is science based, can seem cold and it doesn't have all the answers or very comforting answers.  Alt med tends to be the opposite.  That's, at least, part of the reason people get taken in by it.

 

Just remember the old adage: Alternative medicine that works is simply called medicine.

Dimland Radio Science Hero:  Jimmy Kimmel & His Writers

In early September, a video of a young woman having a twerking fail in which her legs caught fire had gone viral.  The news media reported on the video and it had received more than 10 million views when Jimmy Kimmel revealed the story behind the video.  Brilliant!

So, for showing how the 24 hour news cycle has helped heighten the news media's gullibility in order to fill that 24 hours, Jimmy Kimmel and his writing staff are Dimland Radio Science Heroes.  Congratulations!

Movie Recommendation: Argo (2012)

Warner Bros.

 

Sure, you've probably seen this Best Picture Oscar-Winning film, but I still wanted to recommend it.  Ben Affleck does a great job of both acting in and directing this true-life thriller.  And he's never been more handsome.  The longer hair and the beard really work on him.  Just sayin'.
