dimland radio 8-17-19 show notes

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

I think I have ARGHed about some of this before, but I was fired up again, so I just let it rip.

When listening to podcasts, there are things hosts do that tend to annoy me. One thing that some do is drink drinks with ice in the glass and the tinkity-tinkity-tink sounds get on my nerves.

And there's another thing some podcasters do that makes me grit my teeth. They call the little talk at the top of the show that is unrelated to the main topic or guest their "Maron Open". The Maron Open is named for Marc Maron whose wildly successful podcast WTF, started in 2009, has him giving a little talk at the beginning of each show, then he brings on his guest.

I'm telling you, it seems each generation thinks they've invented the wheel. Marc Maron did not invent the show opening anecdote. It goes way, way back. In fact, Jack Paar used to do it in the late 1950s. I kid you not!

What really set me off was a thing that is done on every goddamn episode of the My Favorite Murder podcast. MFM is a true crime podcast (also wildly successful) hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, two funny women who are fascinated by true crime stories, each will tell the story of a murder, a serial killer, or some other story of survival or death. For the most part, it is a very entertaining podcast.

But then it happens. After their Jack Paar Open, they have to spend time figuring out which of the two goes first with her story. Every goddamn time! AAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Figure that out BEFORE you start recording!

The Misidentified Owl Prophecies

On the most recent episode of MFM, Karen told the story of the Mothman sightings. Beginning in the fall of 1966 and through December 1967 in the rural area of West Virginia along the Ohio River, a series of sighting of a large winged man with glowing red eyes were making the news. The sightings took place at night and most were likely people mistaking owls for some mysterious creature.

The sightings stopped in the immediate aftermath of the collapse of Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967. The fact the sightings stopped after the tragedy that claimed 46 lives led to speculation that the "Mothman" was attempting to warn of the impending bridge collapse.

Or. The sightings stopped because claiming to have seen a giant flying man seemed silly after such a tragedy.

Yep, This Is Our President Part Two

As if talking about him for the better part of last week's show, I talked some more about the cluelessness of our president in relation to his visits with the hospital staff, first responders, and survivors of the most recent senseless mass shootings. Another photograph caught my attention and I think it is appalling. It shows the president with a big smile and a thumbs up while his wife, also smiling, holds a newly orphaned baby, whose parents were killing while sheltering the baby from a hail of bullets. Talk about tone deaf!

But, here's the more disturbing that, I have a friend who is a Trump supporter who attempted to spin the photo as a celebration of life. I have known this person from more than 25 years, and I can say with 98% certainty if it had been the Clintons in that picture he would have been livid.

This one doesn't bother me.
I also attempted to practice the principle of charity by comparing the orphan photo to another also showing the president with the smiling thumbs up pose, but this time it was with the hospital staff. That image doesn't bother me. It may be somewhat callous considering why he was at that hospital, but he is with the staff, not the victims. They are doing their jobs and the president is showing them his support. Even one of the staff members is giving a thumbs up.

This Product May Do Something...

Friend of the show and mine, Craig spotted this banner at a local festival. It's for the CBD oil that is all the over-hyped rage now. Look at all the uses of the weasel words "may" and "support". It just may do something or it may not.

YouTube Video Series Recommendation: Welcome To The Basement

My friend Craig also turned me onto Welcome To The Basement, a movie review series on YouTube. Hosted by Matt Sloan and Craig (a different Craig) Johnson, the two take a humorous, if sometimes corny, look at movies that Matt has never seen before. The hosts both seem like really nice fellows and their reviews are pretty good. Warning! There are spoilers.

Matt received 10 points for his stance on onscreen vomiting. He doesn't like it. Neither do I.

Oh, and 10 points to my friend for recommending this movie review series.

Check it out!

The Reasons For No Show Last Week

After producing no shows through most of September and only doing one this month, I took another week off. I had planned to record a show early, but things didn't go as planned. I got sick and didn't feel up to recording a show early.

The reasons for recording on Wednesday include: Thursday was MN Skeptics meet-up night and I usually get back late, so I wouldn't record that night, but I didn't attend due to being sick anyway. Friday was my wife's and my 16th wedding anniversary, which was the main reason I wanted to record early. And Saturday there would be too much to do to record.

And there was something else that happened.

An Atheist Rant

Before I discussed the other significant event that happened in the past week or so, I went into a rant about how religious people have a way of rationalizing tragic events. They manage to both credit their god for positive events after a tragedy, while not blaming that god for allowing the tragedy to happen.

It's really something to behold.

This rant was prompted mainly by a news report about a survivor of the Vegas shooting and why the victim's father believed he survived being shot. God has a plan! Ugggh.

Stanley Green December 30, 1935 - October 13, 2017

Taken during his time in Vietnam.

My father-in-law died on Friday the 13th. Yes, Amy's and my anniversary. Timing is everything, but I choose to consider his death on that day makes it even more special.

I talk about my father-in-law, his last few years and months, and the time he ended his journey through life.

It's Just A Coincidence!

Shortly after my father-in-law died gravity caused a part of a light fixture just outside Dad's room to fall and break. I made certain to keep the family members present that it wasn't some kind of message.

Later on there was another odd coincidence.

It's just a coincidence!

Pedantic Moment: Call The Police First!

I recently watched the 1939 horror film The Return of Doctor X. It features Humphrey Bogart in his only role in that genre. It's interesting if a bit silly.

A newspaper reporter played by Wayne Morris lands an interview with a big time stage actress. When he arrives at her hotel room, he finds her dead. Does he call hotel management? Does he call the police?

Nope. He calls his editor and they put out an exclusive as an extra, which hits the streets before the police are even notified.

Things were different in the '30s, but not that different.

Another Pedantic Moment: Why Is Scotty Included Twice?

This image caught my eye. It was accompanied by a question. People were asked which of these characters they would want to be their chief engineer.

If you are familiar with Star Trek you might just ask the same question: Why is Scotty in there twice?

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here are the Top Three Cool Things from this week.

3) I saw the trailer for the next Star Wars movie. It looks pretty damn cool!

2) Amy and I went to see My Favorite Murder live. It was very funny.

1) As of October 13, 2017, Amy and I have been married for 16 years.

Movie Recommendation: None

I ran out of time, so you are on your own this week.

dimland radio 12-31-16 show notes

Correction

I did make this correction in last week's show notes, still I started off the show letting my listeners know that the late New York Gov. Mario Cuomo did not mention 9/11 in Ken Burns' Baseball. That documentary first aired on PBS in 1994, seven years before the terrorist attacks in September, 2001.

Whoops. My mistake.

Dimland Radio ARGH!

My mistake correction led to me talking about how much I dislike it when grown adults say, "My bad." The phrase is "my mistake." Adults use that phrase. Toddlers just learning English might say "my bad," but you're an adult. Quit it!

A Ridiculous Moment In Janitorial
Janitorial work is often thankless. Most customers only call us when they want to complain about something. If we are doing our job properly, we usually don't hear anything from the customer.

Recently, we received an unusual request from one customer. When emptying their trash cans, they asked us to "...set things on our desk if [the cleaners] think [the customers] really don't want it 'thrown away'..."

Seriously?! They expect our cleaners to determine if trash is really trash?

The Rewards For An Artist Are So Rare

A fellow member of the Minnesota Skeptics, when learning I'm a cartoonist, asked if I could do an illustration of a Siamese cat having just killed two podcast hosts. The podcast is My Favorite Murder hosted by Karen Kilagariff and Georgia Hardstark and the murdering cat is Elvis.

Yep. I did this.
I did the illustration and had it ready for the next month's MN Skeptics meet-up. He was very impressive and I received much-gratifying praise for my ability. He said many of the same things I hear from other people. Such as, "I can't even draw a straight line." "How do you draw so well?" "Please allow me to pay you handsomely."

Well, that last statement is something that's pretty much never uttered. But my friend and I came to an agreeable arrangement for him to pay for my beers for the next several meet-ups.

Then something interesting happened. This fellow skeptic is a rather skilled wood-worker and carpenter and he had a small world moment which he shared on Facebook. I was then able to pleasantly turn the tables, so to speak, on him.

Listen to the show for the details.

Adam Ruins Everything

Adam Conover hosts a TruTV show called Adam Ruins Everything, on which he examines popular beliefs and then explains why those beliefs are wrong. Such as drinking 19 gallons of water a day to stay properly hydrated. If you're thirsty, drink some water. It's pretty basic.

His show has come under some fire by electric car advocates recently, but, as far as I can tell, he seems to get his facts right. And the show cites sources.

You can also watch segments of the show on YouTube, which is where I found his bit on trophy hunting. Oh, no, he's not ruining trophy hunting the way many of my Facebook friends would like. Nope, he's demonstrating how trophy hunting is actually helping save those endangered species. It may seem counter-intuitive, but it's true.

Watch this clip:

So, I've been posting this clip in the comment threads of FB friends who share images of rich folks happily poses with dead lions, leopards, giraffes, etc. These friends are so disgusted by these rich folks. But none have ever said as much as, "Oh, yeah!" whenever I've shared the information de-vilifying trophy hunting.

I may not be into hunting, but I don't find legal trophy hunting disgusting. I'm not disgusted by photos of rich folks posing with their legal and very expensive trophy kill. No, I save my disgust for photos of the damage done by poachers. They (poachers) and loss of habitat are the true dangers to endangered animals.

This disgusts me. Ivory from poaching.
This disgusts me. A poacher-slaughtered rhino with horn removed.
Melissa Bachman, famous trophy hunter, does not disgust me. I may not understand the appeal of hunting of any kind, but she does this legally and pays plenty. And that money goes to help protect endangered species.
