Coincidence?! Yes

 

Rene Auberjonois, Michael J. Pollard, and Carroll Spinney all died within days of each other in the last week or so. No, I'm not going to go on (goon?) about famous people dying in threes. They don't, people just notice in threes.

 

The coincidence has to do with their deaths and Gilbert Gottfried's podcast.

 

Nothing earth-shaking, but it's kinda nifty.

 

Correction: I should note, while getting these notes together, I found out that Pollard had died a couple weeks prior to Auberjonois and Spinney. I hadn't heard of his death until around the same time as the other two famous fellows. Whoops.

Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg Named Time Magazine's Person Of The Year

Let the climate change denial tantrums begin!

Before Greta Thunberg was named POTY, climate change deniers were attacking her. Her, but not her message, because she made them uncomfortable. They would say she's being used by the climate change hoaxers. They will say she's mental retarded. She's not. She is on the autism spectrum, that doesn't mean she's retarded.

 

She's making waves and the deniers don't like it. They can't refute the scientific facts (well, they can do, but they don't have the facts on their side), so the attack her.

 

I read portions of two open letters to her. One from an admirer, one from an asshole.

TV Tropes

They can be annoying, TV tropes. They don't really ruin shows, but I do tend to role my eyes when they pop up. I went over a couple I've been noticing.

 

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Humpback Whales & The Crew Of The Enterprise

 

 

The humpback whale population has made a remarkable come back and the maker of the meme above wanted to make a little joke by crediting the resurgence to the bridge crew of the Starship Enterprise. Except...

That's the crew from Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan not Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was the movie the crew stole two, actually three, one was pregnant, humpback whales from the 1980s to bring back to the 23rd century.

 

You see, in Star Trek IV, the humpbacks had gone extinct by the 23rd century and a space probe from some unknown civilization was trying to communicate with the disappeared species. So, the crew goes back in time to steal two whales to bring back and tell the probe they're ok. And, they somehow repopulate the species in the future (three whales are not enough to repopulate the species), not today as the meme maker seems to be suggesting.

 

However...

A Deep Dive

I've decided to try to do a really deep take on a certain political summit. I think it's important to dig in and take a good look at a topic of great interest and importance. How well did I do? Have a listen.

Roseanne Cancelled

This might have gotta a little on the rambling side, as I tried to figure out if actor/comedian Rosanne is a racist. Well, I don't know what's in her head, but her actions were certainly racial insensitive. This is complicated. I knew the relaunch of her hit show might be a bit rocky, because the actor Roseanne and the character Roseanne are both Trump supporters. The relaunched show was a ratings success, but a late night and very ill though out tweet led to the show's cancellation.

 

I thought the new show would have been a good opportunity to show why blue collar Americans might support Trump. It might have been a good way to show blue collar Trump supporters they might be wrong. It could have been another All In The Family.

Looks like it's a missed opportunity.

 

Political Correctness

 

I mentioned a take some comedian had about some people who are so upset about political correctness. That person thought those folks were upset because they couldn't use the N word. That might be true for some.

 

I did give an example of a use of political correctness that I thought was unnecessary and changed the meaning of a very famous phrase.

 

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Tattoos Are The New Normal

After I mistakenly replayed an audio bit from last week's show, I got to talking how the meme above (I could find the image, but not the meme) sort of represents the new normal, but it's telling us to "Fuck Normal, Be Yourself."

 

The Volcano In Hawaii: Perception Vs Reality

Someone created the image above to demonstrate how people tend to overestimate the size of big stories. It's a perception thing. Watching the news tends to get us thinking the world is going to heck, because the news focuses on the bad stuff. There's a lot more good stuff going on, but much of the good stuff doesn't warrant news coverage.

 

Wanna worry less? Watch less news.

The Reasons For No Show Last Week

After producing no shows through most of September and only doing one this month, I took another week off. I had planned to record a show early, but things didn't go as planned. I got sick and didn't feel up to recording a show early.

 

The reasons for recording on Wednesday include: Thursday was MN Skeptics meet-up night and I usually get back late, so I wouldn't record that night, but I didn't attend due to being sick anyway. Friday was my wife's and my 16th wedding anniversary, which was the main reason I wanted to record early. And Saturday there would be too much to do to record.

 

And there was something else that happened.

 

An Atheist Rant

 

Before I discussed the other significant event that happened in the past week or so, I went into a rant about how religious people have a way of rationalizing tragic events. They manage to both credit their god for positive events after a tragedy, while not blaming that god for allowing the tragedy to happen.

 

It's really something to behold.

 

This rant was prompted mainly by a news report about a survivor of the Vegas shooting and why the victim's father believed he survived being shot. God has a plan! Ugggh.

My father-in-law died on Friday the 13th. Yes, Amy's and my anniversary. Timing is everything, but I choose to consider his death on that day makes it even more special.

 

I talk about my father-in-law, his last few years and months, and the time he ended his journey through life.

It's Just A Coincidence!

Shortly after my father-in-law died gravity caused a part of a light fixture just outside Dad's room to fall and break. I made certain to keep the family members present that it wasn't some kind of message.

 

Later on there was another odd coincidence.

Pedantic Moment: Call The Police First!

I recently watched the 1939 horror film The Return of Doctor X. It features Humphrey Bogart in his only role in that genre. It's interesting if a bit silly.

 

A newspaper reporter played by Wayne Morris lands an interview with a big time stage actress. When he arrives at her hotel room, he finds her dead. Does he call hotel management? Does he call the police?

 

Nope. He calls his editor and they put out an exclusive as an extra, which hits the streets before the police are even notified.

 

Things were different in the '30s, but not that different.

 

Another Pedantic Moment: Why Is Scotty Included Twice?

This image caught my eye. It was accompanied by a question. People were asked which of these characters they would want to be their chief engineer.

 

If you are familiar with Star Trek you might just ask the same question: Why is Scotty in there twice?

 

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

2) Amy and I went to see My Favorite Murder live. It was very funny.

Hey! Do You Like A Good Poop Story?

 

I have worked for the same janitorial service for the better part of nearly 28 years and I've cleaned a lot of nasty messes, but there was one mess that defied belief. It involved a very security conscious business, video surveillance cameras, and an employee who couldn't tell when he had pooped.

 

Yep. He was vacuuming and... Well, the next morning guess who was cleaning the mess.

 

Uh huh.

Seems Legit

Last week the boss received the following message in his email:

"My name is Scott Smith, Attorney of Law. Sequel to your non response to my previous email, I am re-sending this to you again thus; A deceased client of mine, that shares the same last name as yours, who died as a result of a heart-related condition on January 28th 2009. I have contacted you to assist in distributing the money left behind by my client which is lodged in the bank."

 

Well, all the words are spelled correctly, but the grammar sounds a bit off. It sounds as though this Scott Smith, Attorney of Law, has as his first language something other than English. Of course, this is one of those internet scams sent out in hopes of getting a response to hook someone into sending money or giving bank account information.

 

However, the grammar is so bad and the idea that someone having the same last name is enough to determine a connection is so ridiculous, I find it hard to believe anyone falls for this. I'm tempted to rewrite that email so it, at least, makes sense. But that would be helping a scam.

 

There are all sorts of scammers out there. I mentioned seeing a video of a fellow who does his best to flummox a phone scammer. The scammer is trying to convince the man that it's the IRS calling demanding being paid for a tax debt. The fellow strings the scammer along pretty well.

Pedantic Moment: Hogan's Heroes, Star Trek, The Suspension Of Disbelief, And Language

My pedantry goes way back. As a kid, I would struggle to suspend my disbelief of shows such as Hogan's Heroes. Sure, I could accept that such a camp would exist in the world that show inhabits. Yeah, the Allies have rigged the prisoner of war camp with a system of tunnels, radio equipment, and have bugging devices in the commandant's office. Certainly, the Germans in charge of the camp are too dim-witted to discover their prison camp is essentially a hub of espionage and sabotage.

 

But, Hogan and his men had better all be fluent in the German language. So much so that they can fool native Germans. They had to be, otherwise how would they know what Klink and Schultz are talking about in Klink's office. Surely, when by themselves they must have spoken their native language.

 

I don't recall the series ever mentioning the language skills of the Heroes, but they must have had them.

 

Then I mentioned science fiction and how various shows and books have gotten around the language issue. Isaac Asimov had a Galactic Language in his Foundation series. Douglas Adams had that fish that fit in the ear canal and translated alien languages. Doctor Who's TARDIS had the ability to translate language. And Star Trek had the universal translator.

 

All interesting ways around language barriers, however if you watch Star Trek, especially the later series-es, the need for a translator seems to be forgotten on occasion. I gave a couple examples on the show.

Movie Recommendation: The Jungle Book (2016)

We just watched this one. I thought it was terrific with some of the best CGI effects to date. The story was entertaining and the voice actors including Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Christopher Walken, Scarlett Johansson, and Bill Murray were spot on. The young actor Neel Sethi did a very good job considering he was acting against green screen and motion-capture actors.

There are two musical numbers of songs lifted from the Disney animated classic version from 1967. Not being much of a musical guy, I'm not all that sure they needed to be included in this version. Director Jon Favreau did a good job working in one number (Bare Necessities), however the second (I Wan'na Be Like You) felt a little shoe-horned in. Minor complaint.

I'm seriously tempted to give this a five star rating on Netflix. I'll probably go four stars, because I'm not much of a musical guy and the songs weren't really necessary. Still this movie is well worth a watch or two.
