A Co-host?

Yes, as my wife was out Friday night (when I usually record the show) my son, Hayden, graciously agreed to stay up and record the show with good ole Dad.

 

We started with a brief discussion of the big supermoon eclipse. Hayden seemed interested, but not overly so.

iTunes Sucks

I updated my iTunes and lost all my podcasts. Oh, they are still being downloaded, I can find that part out. But I can't find my podcast library. My songs are all there in the music library. I can see those, but the podcasts ain't showing up.

 

It could be that I'm doing something wrong. It seems more likely the iTunes update has some glitch. And just try to get help from iTunes. They ain't helpful.

 

Perhaps the next update will fix the issue.

 

Joe Soucheray's Problem With Global Warming

Joe Soucheray is a talk radio host and a columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He can be described as a curmudgeon and a conservative. He's also a global climate change denier. At least, he denies the human causation of it.

 

He frequently brings up news items on some extreme weather event or condition happening now that hasn't been as bad or happened in the distant past. For instance, he recently talked about an article stating California is the driest it has ever been since 500 years ago.

 

Soucheray will ask what caused that dry condition back then. "We weren't driving cars then."

 

His point is that if something other than humans caused that (and the many other examples he's given over the years) to happen back then, maybe something other than humans is causing it now.

 

It seems a fair point, but he doesn't connect all those past events. He doesn't notice those past events happened separately from each other. He also doesn't notice that all those not this bad since examples are all happening now!

 

If all of those past events were occurring at roughly the same time he might have something there. But they didn't.

Spoiling A Doctor Who Episode

 

I tried to limit the spoilage. I talked about the season eight episode 'Kill The Moon' and stated that a chicken egg does not gain mass as the chick grows inside it. The egg is a closed system, so it cannot gain mass.

I also mentioned a skit from 'Mr. Show' about blowing up the moon. I find the skit very funny. Check it out.

 

Bigfooter Determines Bigfoot Prints Are Likely Fake

Not all bigfoot print, I'm sure, but Cliff Barackman of (Not) 'Finding Bigfoot' investigated a sizable find of bigfoot prints in London, OR. He has studied casts of the prints and has determined they are probably fake.

 

There's hope for this young man. 

Movie Recommendations: Whitey: USA V James J Bolger (2014)

 

CNN Films

 

Whitey Bolger is a nasty piece of work. And this documentary shows how nasty. It also shows how members of the FBI were very willing to get in bed with this guy. Fascinating and icky all around. And there's a tragic unexpected twist in there.

The movie 'Black Mass' with Johnny Depp as Whitey is based on information in this film.

The New TV

This show was live because we got a new TV. I had to go pick it up Friday evening which threw off my normal Friday night schedule. So, instead of prerecording the show on Friday night, I went on live. I hope I didn't sound too scared. At least, no more than usual.

Dyer: Hoaxing Again

World renown bigfoot hoaxer Rick Dyer admits to another hoax. Ho hum. Hoaxers gotta hoax.

Dimland Radio Science Hero: Jimmy Wales

 

There is a petition going around with the goal of making Wikipedia less critical of alternative medicine. Those darn skeptics on Wikipedia keep letting users know that alt medicine is not supported by science. The petitioners are threatening to not donate to Wikipedia and Jimmy Wales, co-founder of the online encyclopedia, has said the alt medicine supporters need to show that their treatments work. It's as simple as that.

Some Cosmos Talk

My friend John thinks the little he's seen of the new Cosmos is a "disaster." What?! I pointed out why he is wrong. Also, the boys and girl over at the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe podcast have given Cosmos a bit of a review. Their overwhelming overall impression is that the show is awesome. They had a handful of minor nit picks, however, and I went over those.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the show on our new TV.

Two More Dicks

A viral video has been labeled as instant karma (karma is, of course, nonsense, but still) has come to my attention. A road rager got stuck behind a left lane hog. The road rager final got passed the hog but ended up losing control of his vehicle and crashing of the road. Luckily, no one else was involved in the crash.
 

The common reaction I saw was people thinking the guy got what he deserved. Now, I agree, but the woman who planted herself in the PASSING LANE should have gotten out of the way.

They were both dicks. He was dickus majorus. She was dickus minorus. (That's made up Latin. Pretty good, eh?)

Movie Recommendation: ParaNorman (2012)

 

This was the first film we watched on our new TV while streaming on Netflix. Yep, our new TV has Wi-Fi. Anywho, ParaNorman is an animated feature that is pretty clever. My son, Hayden, really enjoyed it and made sure I watched it with him the following day. It's pretty good and you can stream it on Netflix.

Not Fun Aspects Of My Week

 

This was an unusual show for me, but I'll get to that in a moment.  After a somewhat awkward start, I talked about my son having pneumonia and that I had to fire one the folks who works for the company for which I am the office manager.  Oh, joy.

 

Guests?!

 

I said this was an unusual show, didn't I?  I took the show on location, did it from a garage, and I had guests!

 

My guests were fellow ZTalkers Chris Davis and Jenny Gurney and her mother Bonnie.  It was different.  We covered a few topics and had a good time.

Chris and Jenny host two program on Z Talk Radio: Proximity Paranormal Weds. at 5pm Eastern and Paranormal Hotspot Weds. at 10pm Eastern.

Find Any Ghosts?

 

This was my first question of my guests.  They say yes.  Bonnie said that her house is haunted by her grandparents and her husband's grandparents.  And Chris is certain that late at night, while in bed, he sees people walking through the house.  He says he sees them two or three nights a week.

 

But You know me, I'm a skeptic.  And I am skeptical.

 

Pretentious Perfume TV Ads

 

Ok, I know. What perfume ads aren't pretentious.  I talked about one in particular that bothers me with its seriousness and, well, pretentiousness.  The ad features Heather Graham (its one redeeming factor) and was directed by Martin Scorsese!  You can see the full version of the ad here.
 

My guests and I then talked about perfume and Old Spice and Avon bottles.

 

How Many Knees Does An Elephant Have? 

 

I asked my guests that question.  Jenny got it right.  Elephants have the same number of knees that people do.  Two.  They are located on their back legs.  On their front legs (more like arms) elephants and other four-legged mammals have elbows.  Just like us.

 

I was made aware of this by watching the British comedy "game show" hosted by Stephen Fry called QI.  You can find full episodes on YouTube.  Here's one.  I don't know if it the one with the elephant's knees question, but it is collection of highlights of the show.  Enjoy.

 

Never Found In The Eighties: Killing Joke

 

My latest entry in my guest blogging on the Stuck in the 80s blogsite is about the British post-punk band Killing Joke.  Their song Eighties should have been a major anthem in the 80s, but mainstream radio didn't have time for cool song such as this one.  They had too much Phil Collins and Journey to play.

Rick Dyer Is At It Again?

 

Yes, the bigfoot in a freezer guy is at it again.  He has another dead bigfoot body.  Well, not another one, because that one he claimed to have in 2008 turned out to be a costume.

 

This time around he has invited a select few, including two unidentified reporters, to see this find of the century.  His big find will rock the world of animal biology!

I'm not holding my breath.

 

Here is a video by the known hoaxer himself.  It's a message to the haters.  Rick, just show us the body already.

My Brother In Chat

 

My younger brother spent time in the chat room telling what he thought were embarrassing details about me.  The thing is, nothing he reveled was something I wouldn't tell people about on my own.

Movie Recommendation (Guest Edition): Profile Of A Killer (2012)

Bonnie recommended this serial killer thriller that was filmed in Minnesota.  It is about the H61 killer who turns out to be a teenager.  Chris says that about halfway through the film you may find yourself rooting for the killer.
