And Now A Little James Randi

My friend, Chris Brown, got to hobnob with several skeptics in high standing at the recent NECSS event.  He dropped my name and how I do a skeptic-themed show on a paranormal network.  James Randi was impressed and signed a photo just for me.  Amazing!

The Amazing Randi signed just for me!
I also did a little compare and contrast of Randi and self-proclaimed psychic Chip Coffey.  Pretty much the way fans of Chip Coffey feel about James Randi is the way I feel about Chip.  We, skeptics, don't think highly of Chip mainly do to one thing - the child exploitation program Psychic Kids.  Here is an article voicing the skeptical concerns raised by the paranormally admired Chip Coffey.
Another Facebook Meme

This one just doesn't smell right.  Can it be true that the woman in the photo (above) will really be paying her student loan for 55 years?  Something just doesn't add up.

It's Not True: The Baby Boom 9 Months After The NYC Blackout In 1965

Pulled off the pages of Snopes.com is this nugget of the NYC blackout in 1965 did not lead to a spike in the birth rate nine months later.  You can read about it here.

I'm Sure He'd Be There, If He Hadn't Been Dead For 34 Years

Organizers of the London 2012 Olympics requested the management of rock legends The Who if Keith Moon could play during the ceremonies.  There's one problem...Keith Moon has been dead since 1978.  Read more about this oversight here.
I also mentioned Moon's dangerous drug and alcohol-filled lifestyle which lead to his death.  It also lead to him passing out during a concert that prompted Pete Townshend to ask if anyone in the audience knew how to play the drums.  Someone did and he got to be a rock star with the greatest band ever, if just for one night.  Learn more about it and watch the footage of Keith passing out here.

Movie Recommendation: A Hard Day's Night (1964)

Miramax Films

This was The Beatles' first feature film and it's a blast.  The Fab Four do a great job playing themselves in a day in the life of the world's most popular and influential band.  Great fun!

A Look At Sports
I started out the show talking about the perfect game pitched by Chicago White Sox pitcher, Philip Humber, earlier in the day. Very cool. I also got around to mentioning the big comeback win by the Yankees over the Red Sox.

Sick Talk

Both my son, Hayden, and I were sick last week. He missed three days of school, I missed none days of work. Kids got it so easy.

Jesus Christ!

The other day I found a flyer by our front door. The flyer was from some Christian group inviting us to some church event of something of that nature. The front of the flyer depicted Jesus as a baby, on the cross and as the ascended king of kings. Oh, and also as a white guy!

That led me to talk about what Jesus would have looked like, if he actually had existed. I mentioned two attempts to depict Jesus as he might have appeared: one done using forensic methods, including archaeological, anthropological, genetic evidence; the other using the Shroud of Turin and computer technology.

The first seems to me to be very likely. The Shroud based face still seemed a little too European looking. Which makes sense, because it's very likely that the Shroud is a artifact created in Europe in the 14th century.

I even talked a bit about the possibility that Jesus might not have even existed. In talking about that I referred to an argument made by the late, ardent atheist, Christopher Hitchens. You can hear his take here.

And you can see the two reports on what Jesus might have looked like here (the more accurate version) and here (the still too white version).

A Very Good Reason Not To Vote Republican
Well, at least not for Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen. Why not? Well, she thinks the earth is only 6000 years old.

(A moment of stunned silence.)

It's true! She's on record saying so right here. ARGH!

I gave a list of several human (and our ancestors') achievements that all took place before 6000 years ago. Such as, spears, rope, pottery, and beer! I pulled that list from here and here.

Movie Recommendation: Monty Python's Life Of Brian (1979)

Homemade Films

A brilliant comedy by Monty Python satirizing the life of Jesus. It follows Brian as he is mistaken for being the long-awaited messiah. "I am not the messiah!" "You are the messiah, I should know! I've followed a few!" Brilliant

Memes Talk

Really? A $2 jump from Regular to Plus? And, then, a one PENNY jump to Supreme?

Lots of commentary on a couple of photographic "memes" that I found on Facebook. One was an obvious fake in which someone tries to scare us about gas prices and why they are so high. I pointed out that the pricing scale shown does not adhere to reality.

I made this! Feel free to share, please!

The next "meme" I discussed was one that I created and hope to get to saturate the internet. It's a cat lady's car. I think it's pretty funny and I did a brilliant job on it. But then I would think that.

Not sure David Drake really said this.

The third "meme" I discussed relates the Titanic. Yes, I did talk about the Titanic last week, but I had more to say as related to this particular meme about the building of Noah's Ark and the building of the Titanic. My main thrust of my talk was that, when looking at the two vessels, the Titanic actually existed. I also got into more of the aspects about the whole Ark story.

Deconstructed Sgt. Peppers

I touched briefly on a very cool break down of The Beatles' song 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.' The song was recorded using a 4 track system and someone posted a video on YouTube separating the four tracks. Check it out, very cool.

I also mentioned another YouTube clip with a musician breaking down the opening chord of another terrific Beatles' tune, 'A Hard Day's Night.'
Also very cool.

Movie Recommendation (Television Division): Nova: The Case For Ancient Astronauts (1977)

This was an assignment of sorts, rather than a recommendation. In 1977, PBS science program, Nova, ran a documentary examining, scientifically and skeptically, Erich von Daniken's ideas that space aliens came to earth in the distant past. The aliens came here, apparently, to help build pyramids and mate with us and who knows what else.

My Scam Story Update

Back on the March 24 show I told how I may have fallen for a scam. The scammers said they would send the company I work for an invoice. Well, thus far the invoice has yet to show up. It appears that what they were really doing was fishing for a credit card number.

JREF 2012 Pigasus Awards

Each year on April 1st the good folks at the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) present their Pigasus Awards. The awards are given to the people or organizations that do the most to promote paranormal, psuedoscience and just plain nonsense. Go here to hear the man himself announce this year's batch of "winners."

Ten Minute Topic With Chris Brown

My skeptical friend Chris Brown

This time our TMT talk wasn't about skepticism, it was about a fundraising event that Chris' son Ethan is putting on to benefit his local library. The event is tied in with the number Tau (6.28) which is 2 x Pi (3.14). We talk about the number and Ethan's upcoming attempt to recite from memory Tau out to 2000 places. The event is to take place May 6, 2012.

The Misadventures Of My Son, Hayden

Hayden had a rough start to March and another rough start to April. On March 1st, Hayden managed to tear his thumbnail away, just a bit, from his thumb. It hurt like the dickens and Hayden got so worked up he passed out.

April 1st (no fooling), Hayden complained of stomach
problems. We gave him an antacid and minutes later he threw up. It was only the second time he had vomited in his life. We suspect food poisoning.

Titanic Talkers

Way back in 1997 I went to see Titanic with my parents. It was a packed theater and we were lucky enough to sit in front of two elderly, loud talking gals. Perhaps if they'd have piped down we might have realized how silly the story was. Spoiler alert: The ship sinks.

Movie Recommendation: The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash (1978)

A loving parody of The Beatles from the mind of Eric Idle. Pretty funny stuff and the songs aren't half bad. Fellow Pythoners Michael Palin and Neil Innes (he wrote the songs) contribute and several members of the Not Ready For Primetime Players of Saturday Night Live also appear. Be sure to watch for George Harrison's cameo as a reporter.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)...

Dimland Radio opening theme song: 'Ram' by The Yoleus
